NBS: Total Retail Sales of Consumer Goods Fall 1.8% YoY in Dec 2022

According to the data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the total retail sales of consumer goods in December 2022 stood at 4.05 trillion yuan, a decrease of 1.8% YoY.

According to the data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the total retail sales of consumer goods in December 2022 stood at 4.05 trillion yuan, a decrease of 1.8% YoY. Among them, the retail sales of consumer goods other than automobiles reached 3.54 trillion yuan, down 2.6% YoY.

The total retail sales of consumer goods in the whole year stood at 43.97 trillion yuan, a decrease of 0.2% over the previous year. Among them, the retail sales of consumer goods other than automobiles were 39.4 trillion yuan, down 0.4% from 2021.
In Dec 2022, the retail sales of consumer goods in urban areas stood at 3.46 trillion yuan, down 1.8% YoY, and those in rural areas were 594.8 billion yuan, down 1.3% on the year. The retail sales of consumer goods in urban areas stood at 38.04 trillion yuan throughout 2022, down 0.3% from 2021, and those in rural areas were 5.92 trillion yuan, flat from 2021.

In December 2022, the retail sales of commodities reached 3,638.5 billion yuan, down 0.1% year-on-year; The catering revenue was 415.7 billion yuan, down 14.1%. In 2022, the retail sales of commodities reached 39.58 trillion yuan, an increase of 0.5% over the previous year; The catering revenue was 4.39 trillion yuan, down 6.3% from the previous year.

In 2022, the retail sales of supermarkets, convenience stores, specialty stores and exclusive shops in retail units above designated size added 3.0%, 3.7%, 3.5% and 0.2% YoY respectively, while those of department stores fell 9.3%.

In 2022, the online retail sales in China reached 13.78 trillion yuan, an increase of 4.0% over the previous year. Among them, the online retail sales of physical goods were 11.96 trillion yuan, up 6.2% YoY, accounting for 27.2% of the total retail sales of social consumer goods. The online retail sales of food, clothing and consumer goods grew 16.1%, 3.5% and 5.7% YoY respectively.
