Chinese Imports of Copper Concentrates in November 2022 Hit a New Monthly High

In November 2022, China imported 2.41 million mt of copper ore and concentrate in physical content, up 10.26% year-on-year, hitting a new monthly high.

SHANGHAI, Jan 13 (SMM) - In November 2022, China imported 2.41 million mt of copper ore and concentrate in physical content, up 10.26% year-on-year, hitting a new monthly high. The imports totalled 23.17 million mt in physical content from January to November, up 8.56% YoY.

China imported 696,500 mt of copper concentrates from Chile, up about 133,200 mt or 23.65% MoM. Shipments of copper concentrates from the country were 108,100 mt in October, up 3,600 mt from September. Imports from Peru were 583,700 mt, up 17.87% or 88,500 mt YoY. In October 2022, a total of 548,500 mt of copper concentrates were shipped from Peru, a decrease of 176,300 mt from September.

China imported 59,700 mt of copper concentrates from Canada in November, up about 50,600 mt or 555.28% on the month; 106,500 mt from the US, up about 81,700 mt or 330.06% MoM; and 137,200 mt from Mexico, up about 93,400 mt or 213.67% MoM.

China imported 72,600 mt of copper concentrates from Mongolia, down about 37,400 mt or 34.03% month-on-month; and 149,800 mt from Kazakhstan, down 2,000 mt or 1.3% month-on-month. The import volume of copper concentrates from Indonesia was 62,500 mt, a decrease of 11.04% or 7,800 mt month-on-month. In November, shipments from the major ports in Indonesia were 304,600 mt, up 145,700 mt from October.

China imported 59,100 mt of copper concentrates from Spain in November 2022, down about 41,000 mt or 41% or month-on-month.

[SMM Copper Wire and Cable Weekly Operating Rate] This week, the operating rate of SMM copper wire and cable enterprises was 69.95, down 0.81 percentage points MoM. Overall operating performance was stable this week. During the week, copper prices hovered at highs, exacerbating wait-and-see sentiment among downstream enterprises, while new orders remained weak. Enterprises still relied on ample orders on hand to keep production basically stable. By segment, the power sector remained the core support, with orders in NEV and optical fiber performing well, while engineering and construction orders were still hardly optimistic. The operating rate of copper wire and cable enterprises is expected to fall 0.67 percentage points MoM to 69.29 next week
