Chinese Tin Imports Surged MoM in Nov on Rising Tin Price and Falling Processing Fee

Published: Dec 21, 2022 15:09 (GMT+8)
In summary, the smelters are likely to be plagued by the low processing fees and sluggish terminal demand.

SHANGHAI, Dec 21 (SMM) - Chinese tin ore and concentrate imports stood at 26,552 mt in November, surging 135.31% on the month; the cumulative imports totalled 222,399 mt in January-November, up 30.08% on the year.

Myanmar, DR Congo, Australia and Brazil among others are the main supplying countries. The imports from Myanmar stood at 21,996 mt, or 5,499 mt in metal content based on the average grade of 25%; the imports from other countries came in at 4,556 mt, or 2,278 mt in metal content based on the average grade of 50%. The volume of imported tin ore and concentrates in November was about 7,777 mt in metal content. China import volume of tin ore and concentrates in November increased significantly month-on-month. The imports from Myanmar grew significantly from the previous month, with a month-on-month increase of up to 125%, which is basically in line with the previous market rumour of 20,000 mt. Among other major tin concentrate supplying countries, the import volume from DR Congo rose sharply from the previous month and has returned to the monthly average level of the year. The imports from Australia also climbed palpably with a MoM growth of more than 50%. The import volume from other countries remained stable as a whole.

On the supply side, domestic processing fees have remained low. Therefore, when tin price rose, the profits of mines were restored, encouraging the mines to produce. And Chinese imports rose subsequently. On the demand side, domestic smelters maintained relatively high operating rates in November, but the output is likely to fall in December, and some smelters have already reduced or suspended the production. In summary, the smelters are likely to be plagued by the low processing fees and sluggish terminal demand. On the backdrop that the demand for raw materials will contract, the follow-up tin ore and concentrate imports are unlikely to be maintained at the current level.

[SEMI: global 300mm fab equipment spending to reach 227 billion USD by 2029]
Global 300mm semiconductor fab equipment spending is forecast to reach 227 billion USD by 2029, driven by AI chips, high-performance computing and advanced manufacturing, according to SEMI. Equipment investment will jump 31% year on year to 149 billion USD in 2026, with double-digit growth seen through 2029. Capacity build-out is accelerating: 20 new 300mm fabs or lines are expected to start construction worldwide in 2026, plus 18 in 2027, excluding R&D-only sites. Construction spending will rise 23% to 47.5 billion USD in 2026, a further 33% to 63.3 billion USD in 2027 and 68.4 billion USD in 2028. The Americas lead growth, with regional equipment spending more than doubling from 18.1 billion USD in 2026 to 40.6 billion USD in 2029; the US starts three new fabs in 2026 and four in 2027. Thirteen new fabs or lines will begin operations or ship first silicon in 2026, rising to 23 in 2027. SEMI CEO Ajit Manocha said demand is translating into physical manufacturing expansion. The 300mm Fab Outlook adds 166 updates covering 163 fabs and lines.

[Cornish Metals halts AIM trading under Capital Access Window to fund South Crofty tin project]
Cornish Metals plc (AIM: TIN), a mineral exploration and development company advancing its wholly owned and permitted South Crofty tin project in Cornwall, UK, has announced its intention to use AIM's newly introduced Capital Access Window in connection with a proposed fundraise. The raise would supplement existing cash reserves and the 210 million USD already secured through senior secured Nordic Bonds, in order to complete project financing and progress South Crofty towards first production in mid-2028. The company entered the window at 7:30am BST on 14 October 2026, a voluntary temporary pause in trading of its AIM shares intended to reach a broader range of investors and provide pricing stability during the fundraise; an offer to retail investors is planned. The window remains in place until an announcement detailing the fundraise results.
