SHANGHAI, Sep 23 (SMM) - According to customs data, China's polysilicon imports stood at 9,100 mt in August, up 50% month on month, but down 6% year on year.

SHANGHAI, Sep 23 (SMM) - According to customs data, China's polysilicon imports stood at 9,100 mt in August, up 50% month on month, but down 6% year on year. The imports totalled 56,800 mt from January to August, a year-on-year decrease of 30%.

Polysilicon output had fallen far short of expectations since July has been due to various factors, driving some downstream buyers to turn to imported polysilicon so as to ensure sufficient raw material supply. This, coupled with arrivals of delayed shipments from July, led to a MoM surge in the import volume in August.

Affected by the sudden maintenance of many polysilicon plants in Xinjiang, domestic polysilicon production continued to decline in July even when new production capacity was continuously put into operation, sending polysilicon prices up. Some downstream buyers began to place additional import orders for delivery in August. Although domestic polysilicon enterprises resumed production one after another in August, the sudden power rationing policy in Sichuan affected the production of leading polysilicon enterprises such as Yongxiang and GCL. Although the production of polysilicon increased in August, it was still 5,000 mt less than expected. At the same time, the production of silicon wafers increased by about 4% in August, and there was still a gap of about 2.5GW in the supply of polysilicon, which led to an increase in the import of polysilicon.

SMM believes that polysilicon imports may decrease significantly in September. With the weakening impact of negative factors, domestic polysilicon production is expected to increase by about 20% in September, while the increase in silicon wafer production will be only 10%, thus the shortages of polysilicon will be greatly relieved. Current high polysilicon prices and bearish sentiment on polysilicon price outlook will turn buyers cautious about importing.

Silicon Metal Market Consolidated at Lows, Polysilicon Prices Remained Under Pressure Going Forward [SMM Silicon-Based PV Morning Meeting Minutes]
[SMM Silicon-Based PV Morning Meeting Summary] Silicon metal: Spot silicon metal prices trended weaker yesterday. SMM east China oxygen-blown #553 silicon was at 8,900-9,100 yuan/mt, down 100 yuan/mt from the previous day. #441 silicon was at 9,200-9,300 yuan/mt, down 100 yuan/mt from the previous day. The SI2605 contract closed at 8,260 yuan/mt yesterday. The decline in silicon prices stimulated the release of some rigid demand orders from downstream buyers and traders. With weak supply and demand, silicon prices consolidated at lows. Polysilicon: N-type recharging polysilicon was quoted at 34.5-37.5 yuan/kg. Polysilicon prices continued to decline recently, and bearish sentiment persisted in the market. Some individual transactions below current mainstream transaction prices emerged. Polysilicon inventory pressure remained significant, exerting pressure on future prices.

[SMM PV News] Maxeon Applies for Judicial Management in Singapore
Maxeon Solar Technologies has filed for voluntary judicial management in Singapore to seek an arrangement with creditors and avoid liquidation. The decision follows two years of financial struggles triggered by the continued detention of its modules by 'US' Customs and Border Protection ('CBP') and recent legal actions seeking over $70 million in damages. After 'CBP' detained its Mexico-made products in 2024 and its former parent SunPower filed for bankruptcy, Maxeon pivoted its focus entirely to the 'US' market. In February 2026, the company abandoned its planned $1.9 billion facility in New Mexico in favor of using third-party 'US' manufacturers. An initial hearing is set for April 9.

[SMM PV News] Neoen Announces Major 'BESS' Projects in France and Japan
Neoen has announced two new battery energy storage system ('BESS') projects during the Franco-Japanese Economic Forum. In France, it will build a 248 MW/496 MWh facility, set to be the country's largest battery and the first connected to the 400 kV network, utilizing units from Japan's Nidec. In Japan, Neoen is making its first local investment with the 100 MW/400 MWh Ako Battery in Hyogo prefecture, partnering with Equans and Toho. Both projects target a 2028 commissioning as Neoen advances its goal to add 10 GW of global capacity by 2030.
