CPAC: The Production of Automobile in Shanghai Has Returned to Pre-Pandemic Level

According to the official account of China Passenger Car Association (CPAC), the COVID-19 pandemic recurred in Shanghai on a large scale, and the negative impact seriously affected the automobile industry in Shanghai. The output of automobile in April was 53,500 units, down 74.8% year-on-year, and new energy vehicles were not spared. Among them, Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory produced only more than 10,000 units, and the delivery to users was extremely poor, with a mere 1,500 units. The production bases of three major passenger car of the SAIC Motor also suffered from the same situation. The Chinese brands Roewe and MG produced less than 10,000 vehicles in April. The total industrial output value of the city's automobile manufacturing industry in April was 16.562 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 70.9%, a record high of negative monthly growth in two years (April 2020 -67.3%). The auto industry was stagnated in Shanghai.

According to information from the Shanghai production bases of several major vehicle companies, as of mid-June, the three major car companies, SAIC Passenger Cars, SAIC Volkswagen and SAIC-GM, had produced 13,000 vehicles a day in Shanghai, returning to the pre-pandemic level, and drove more than 1,000 parts and components supporting enterprises in the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain to resume production.

About 17,000 complete vehicles including Zhiji, Feifan, Roewe and MG from four Chinese brands rolled off the production line. On June 18, double-shift production was officially launched. SAIC Motor's production base in Shanghai has produced more than 200,000 vehicles in early and mid-June, a year-on-year increase of about 30%. Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory is using a double-shift system for close-off production, and its capacity utilisation has returned to 100% in early June.
