It is reported that BMW has invested 170 million euros ($181.5 million) in a research centre in Parsdorf, outskirt of Munich, to tailor batteries to its future needs. The centre will open later this year to produce near-standard samples for the next generation of lithium-ion batteries.

BMW will produce battery samples for the Neue Klasse (New Class) electric drivetrain architecture at the new centre, although BMW currently has no plans to set up its own large-scale battery production. The centre will also focus on other systems and production processes that can be incorporated into standard production. For sustainability reasons, the new BMW Centre will operate by using electricity generated from renewable energy sources, including electricity from the building's rooftop photovoltaic system.

BMW said in a statement that the company will use the centre to study the value creation process of batteries, with the aim of helping future suppliers produce batteries that meet the company's own specifications. BMW wants to increase the energy density of the next generation of lithium-ion batteries, while reducing material and production costs. BMW also plans to reduce the price of its batteries by 30% to compete with Tesla's cylindrical batteries. Batteries usually account for four-fifths of the pack price, and improvements in battery technology and efficiency will reduce their cost.

BMW produces high-voltage batteries, battery modules and components at its plants in Dingolfing, Regensburg and Leipzig, Germany.

Earlier this month, Northvolt started deliveries to customers from its Skelleftea, Sweden factory. Northvolt plans to expand production in the rest of the year and said it has secured more than $50 billion in contracts from automakers such as BMW, Volkswagen Group, Volvo Cars and Polaris.
