According to China General Administration of Customs, domestic tin ore and concentrate imports in March 2022 amounted to 28,986 tonnes, an increase of 37.28% year-on-year. The cumulative imports from January to March stood at 88,730 tonnes, an increase of 113.04% year-on-year.

SHANGHAI, Apr 20 (SMM) – According to China General Administration of Customs, domestic tin ore and concentrate imports in March 2022 amounted to 28,986 tonnes, an increase of 37.28% year-on-year. The cumulative imports from January to March stood at 88,730 tonnes, an increase of 113.04% year-on-year.

In terms of country of origin, China’s tin ore was mainly imported from Myanmar, Congo (Gold), Australia, Thailand, etc. in March. Among them, 21,582 mt of ore were imported from Myanmar with an average grade of 25%. The imports in metal content from Myanmar was about 5,396 mt. Imports from other countries stood at around 7,404 mt with an average grade of 50%, and the metal content was about 3,702 mt. The total volume of metal equivalent imports in March was approximately 9,098 mt.

The imports from Myanmar region in March posted a significant increase MoM, slightly higher than the previous market expectations of 4,000 mt in metal content. The main reason for the increase is that domestic tin ore processing fees remained stable, and the smelters were highly interest in producing. The production resumption after the Chinese New Year holiday also pushed up China’s refined tin output in March.

On the other hand, the imports from other countries in March remained stable, which were basically in line with market expectation. Nonetheless, there was a slight change in the import volume of mainstream supplying countries in March. Imports from Congo (DRC), Thailand and Australia were large in total volume and significant in growth, while those from Bolivia and Malaysia saw significant declines.

In general, although ore imports from Myanmar in March topped expectations slightly, it is still within a reasonable range after taking into account the smelters’ output data in March. Entering April, repeating pandemic in Myanmar caused disturbance to the raw material supply, and it is expected to short-term closure of the boarder port will affect the import volume from Myanmar. Therefore SMM believes that tin ore imports in April will drop slightly due to expected falling imports from Myanmar.

DOWA Holdings plans to produce 113,543 tonnes of zinc in H2 FY2026, up 27.0% from its H1 plan of 89,373 tonnes and 26.8% from the 89,525 tonnes produced in H2 FY2025. Its Akita Zinc operation uses the hematite process to recover indium and other valuable metals at high yields and integrates zinc smelting with rare-metal production and recycling. Higher planned zinc output may increase feed throughput for by-product indium recovery. However, DOWA disclosed no indium production target, and any supply increase will depend on feed grades, recovery rates and operating schedules rather than zinc volumes alone.

Coherent launched PhotonLink, an integrated optics platform for AI infrastructure incorporating Indium Phosphide (InP) lasers, silicon photonics, detectors and optical modules. The company disclosed more than 10 CPO engagements, over 10 NPO engagements and more than five chip-to-chip connectivity projects, with anchor customers and long-term agreements secured for both CPO and NPO. Revenue is expected to begin ramping in Q4 2026. Coherent has shipped over 300 million InP lasers and is expanding its 6-inch InP manufacturing capacity to support the ramp. The customer pipeline provides a clearer commercial demand signal for InP devices and upstream materials, although additional capacity and indium consumption were not disclosed.

According to Counterpoint Research's China Smartphone Weekly Sales Tracker, China's weekly smartphone sales have maintained a double-digit YoY decline since July. Affected by rising storage costs, consumer demand remains weak, but with the arrival of the September new product launch cycle, the market is expected to see a MoM recovery. Sales of the iPhone 18 Pro series in its first three days of availability (accounting for only three days of Week 38) were up 12% YoY compared with the first-week sales of the iPhone 17 Pro series. Driven by this strong start, Apple topped the weekly sales chart in Week 38, capturing a 33% share of China's smartphone market.
