In the global Top 20 electric car list in February, the top two were rarely won by Tesla, with Model Y at the top with more than 45000, Model 3 with more than 30, 000 and Wuling Hongguang MINI EV temporarily in third place.

BYD's super fleet almost occupied the fourth to ninth place, interspersed with only one traditional car company's model: the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which made it the best-selling electric model among traditional carmakers in February. In BYD's fleet, the performance of several cars is worth mentioning, including BYD Song PHEV sales hit a record high, indicating that the car delivery is still rising; BYD Tang PHEV also set a new record with 10032 sales, beating BYD Han and ideal ONE to become the best-selling full-size electric car.

From the above, it can be seen that more than 10,000 monthly sales are necessary to make it into the top five in the global high-end electric car market, whether for traditional car companies, Chinese electric car start-ups or even Tesla models.

However, BYD competes not only in the high-end electric car market, but also in the low-end market, and BYD Dolphin is now the undisputed leader in the low-end electric car field, which was the only Top 20 electric car in the world in February.

In the second half of the list, we can see the rise of electric models from traditional car companies, most notably the 16th Kia EV6, which sold 5460 cars in February, and with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 mentioned above, it seems that production of electric cars on the Hyundai Kia E-GMP platform is in full swing. Toyota RAV4 PHEV is back on the list and is currently 15th, as are Kia Niro and Nissan Leaf. Also worth mentioning is the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which makes the list despite Ford's current capacity constraints.

In addition to the top 20, the Fiat 500e also performed well, becoming the fourth best-selling urban electric car in the world with sales of 4133; BYD's Plus sold 4517 in its second month on the market, and it is expected to join the Top 20 in the future.

Global Top 20 Electric vehicle Brand list in February: Tesla narrowed the gap with BYD

In February, BYD's strong performance ushered in a new chapter, with sales of nearly 88000 vehicles still at the top of the list. However, BYD's lead over Tesla is beginning to shrink, with a gap of less than 10, 000 vehicles, and competition between BYD and Tesla is expected to be fierce in March, given that Tesla usually has a delivery peak at the end of the quarter. Sales of both brands are expected to exceed 100000 in March.

In addition to the top two, Chinese brands are less dominant in the global electric car market than in January, giving opportunities for other brands, such as Hyundai and Kia to climb to seventh and ninth place, respectively, thanks to electric models under Hyundai's E-GMP platform, Peugeot also rose to 16th, and Ford and Toyota returned to the list with sales of the Mustang Mach-E and RAV4 PHEV, respectively.

Among Chinese car brands, Geely is worth mentioning, ranking 15th in the top 20, and is expected to become an important carmaker in the electric vehicle industry in the future.

From the automotive group's point of view, leader BYD's market share increased from 15.5 per cent in January to 15.8 per cent; Tesla's market share fell to 11.4 per cent from 12.8 per cent a year ago, ranking second; SAIC ranked third, market share fell 0.3 percentage points to 8.5 per cent from January.

Volkswagen, whose market share fell to 8.3 per cent from 8.5 per cent in January, is trying to overtake SAIC next month. In the third tier, the current leader is Geely Volvo, 1 percentage point ahead of Hyundai Kia, which just overtook Stellantis last month, which fell to seventh place.
