SHANGHAI, Apr 6 (SMM) - A major aluminium smelter raised its April prebaked anode bid price by 850 yuan/mt month-on-month, driving up aluminium costs sharply.

SHANGHAI, Apr 6 (SMM) - A major aluminium smelter raised its April prebaked anode bid price by 850 yuan/mt month-on-month, driving up aluminium costs sharply. The full costs of smelters rose 375 yuan/mt from a week ago to 18,317 yuan/mt as of this Friday, while the profits shrank 634 yuan/mt to 4,413 yuan/mt due to falling aluminium prices. The domestic coal prices have returned to a rational range as a whole, which will benefit smelters with captive power plants, especially those in north-west China and Inner Mongolia, where the coal prices are relatively lower. However, given the large fluctuations of alumina and auxiliary material prices, aluminium costs are unlikely to decline significantly. The recent surge in freight rate will increase smelters’ costs.
