Great progress! Guidelines and standards for controlling plastic pollution from the source of design have been officially released.

On March 4, 2022, China synthetic Resin Association group standard "PET container packaging products recyclable design guide" and "high density polyethylene (HDPE) container packaging products recyclable recycling design guide" was officially released, and will be formally implemented on May 3, 2022, publishing platform "National Group Standard Information platform". The joint conference of "PET, HDPE Container Packaging Product Recycling Design Guide Group Standard and Recycling Recycling Design Evaluation Project" will be held online from 10:00 to 11:30 on March 31, 2022.

China is a big country in the production, consumption and recycling of plastic packaging and plastic products. The plastic recycling industry treats tens of millions of tons of waste plastics every year. Plastic packaging and plastic products use a variety of materials and complex structure in pursuit of functionality and aesthetics, which is not conducive to the recycling of plastics, resulting in landfill and incineration of plastic products after one-time use, which is a great waste of resources. China urgently needs relevant standards and guidelines for product designers and producers, and how to design recyclable products, but China is still a blank in this field.

In order to help consumer brands, plastic packaging, plastic product design and production enterprises to produce plastic packaging that is fully compatible with China's plastic recycling system, and to promote the high-quality development of plastic recycling industry, to improve the efficiency of plastic recycling and the quality of recycled plastics, it is necessary and urgent to compile recyclable design guidelines for plastic products.

The release of the series of standards of "Design Guide for Recycling and Recycling of plastic products" will take an important and crucial step to control plastic pollution from the source of design.

Compilation background

In order to promote the recycling of domestic plastic products, improve the product recovery rate and the quality of recycled plastics, plastic product users are encouraged to choose plastic products with higher adaptability and friendliness with the existing plastic recycling system.

In November 2019, CPRRA/CSPA signed a memorandum of cooperation with APR to introduce the plastic recyclability design guidelines of the American Plastics Recycling Association (APR) into China and carry out a series of localization work. On July 15, 2020, CPRRA/CSPA officially launched the compilation of a series of standards of "plastic products Recycling and Recycling Design Guide" to promote the promotion of plastic closed loops. During the period from August 12, 2020 to September 3, 2021, the Association worked together with upstream and downstream enterprises to conduct in-depth research on the actual situation of recovery and recycling of domestic plastic products. At the same time, the Technical Committee of the Association held six PET technical committee meetings and five polyolefin hard material (HDPE) technical committee meetings to collate and summarize the continuous upgrading guidelines of plastic recycling enterprises according to the application of existing plastic recycled products.

After nearly three years of efforts, the international advanced ideas and concepts of plastic recycling design have been transformed into the "plastic products Recycling Design Guide" which is suitable for China's national conditions. On December 27th, the Standardization Technical Committee of China synthetic Resin Association formed a letter for soliciting opinions on three group standards, including the guidelines for recyclable Design of Poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) products.
