On Friday, Sony and Honda said they would work together to develop and sell pure electric cars. The two companies are ambitious and hope to be key players in the next generation of cars.
The two companies said in a statement that they would form a joint venture this year and plan to start selling the first electric car in 2025. The new company is expected to be responsible for planning, designing, developing and selling electric cars, but does not own and operate production facilities, so Honda is expected to be responsible for the production of the first model, while Sony is expected to be responsible for the development of its mobile services platform.
The two companies held a press conference in Tokyo at 16:00 Beijing time.
"although there are many historical and cultural similarities between Sony and Honda, our areas of technical expertise are very different," Honda CEO Mitsubishi said in a statement. Therefore, I believe that this alliance combines the advantages of our two companies and provides great possibilities for the future of mobile travel. "
Although Sony's past dominance in consumer electronics has been taken away by South Korean rivals such as Samsung, Sony still holds cutting-edge technology trumps in areas such as key sensors for self-driving.
The partnership marks Sony's first substantial foray into the electric vehicle business. In the past few years, Sony has repeatedly demonstrated its ambitions in the automotive field.
Sony showed an electric concept car called Vision-S at the 2020 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and Vision-S 02 at the 2022 International Consumer Electronics Show. At the time, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida also announced plans to create a new company, Sony Mobile (Sony Mobility), saying that the company would explore bringing electric vehicles to the commercial market.
