Hydro said on February 21 that Brazil's Albras aluminum plant, which had stopped production due to internal power distribution failures, was investigating the cause of the accident and had begun preparations for repair and restart of the production line. It is expected to restart the first batch of electrolytic cells at the beginning of the second quarter and resume normal operation in the fourth quarter of 2022.
On February 19th, Brazil's Albras aluminum plant shut down one of its production lines due to an internal power distribution failure, accounting for 25 per cent of its capacity. The Albras aluminum plant has an annual capacity of 460000 tons and the closed production line has an annual capacity of 110000 tons of liquid aluminum. The other three production lines are not affected and are currently in normal operation.
Hydro owns 51 per cent of the Albras aluminum plant and the remaining 49 per cent is held by Japan's Amazon Aluminium Co., Ltd. Albras is located in the city of Bakarena in the northern Brazilian state of Para, second only to the Alunort alumina refinery of a hydroelectric power plant.
