Tesla released a message on February 19th to celebrate the launch of the millionth 4680 battery:
At present, Tesla produces 4680 batteries in four super factories in California, Texas, Nevada and Berlin, Germany, while Panasonic also supplies Tesla.
Judging from the current production situation, the Model Y in the first half of 2022 will be mainly matched by Tesla's self-made batteries.
According to US auto media Electrek, the millionth 4680 battery is produced by Tesla's pilot plant in California. Tesla had previously set a goal of producing 10GWh batteries at the plant.
Drew Baglino (Drew Baglino), senior vice president of Tesla's power systems and energy engineering department, also revealed last month that "we have made meaningful progress in expanding the production of 4680 batteries at our pilot plant in California. 4680 batteries will not be a limiting factor for 2022 production."
When Tesla sent the photo to celebrate, the Model Y loaded with 4680 batteries was about to be delivered. Tesla previously said that the Model Y produced by Tesla's Texas super factory will carry 4680 batteries, and delivery will begin at the end of this quarter. Tesla's 4680 battery capacity is expected to reach 100GWhh per year by the end of 2022, enough for 1.3 million electric vehicles.
It is understood that each Model Y needs about 1000 4680 batteries, and 1 million 4680 batteries is enough to produce about 1000 Model Ys in a super factory in Texas.
Tesla produces millions of 4680 batteries, which is just the beginning of the industrial chain. in order to achieve the goal of delivering millions of cars, in addition to self-control, outsourcing is essential. Panasonic CEO previously said that Tesla's demand for 4680 batteries is strong, and the commercial listing of 4680 batteries is planned to proceed step by step, and the 4680 batteries it produces will be given priority to supply Tesla.
However, Panasonic will produce 4680 prototype batteries for Tesla as early as 2023, and its plant has an annual output of only 10GWhh, which can only meet the battery needs of about 150000 cars.
In this context, domestic and foreign head lithium battery suppliers are accelerating the construction of 4680 battery production line. It is said that Ningde Times, Yiwei Lithium Energy and Bick batteries will be put into mass production of Tesla 4680 batteries this year. Among them, Yiwei Lithium Energy and Bic batteries are actively building plants for production; LG Energy has previously confirmed that it is developing 4680 batteries and plans to mass produce them in a new production line at Wucang Plant.
In the material sector, Fangyuan and Zhongwei are mainly engaged in cathode material precursors, both of which have entered the Tesla supply chain; China Baoan, Tiannai Technology and Tianci Materials have laid out 4680 battery materials one after another.
In addition, 4680 batteries have higher requirements for lithium-ion devices. Among the lithium equipment companies, Yinghe Technology has begun to supply customers with key equipment to meet the production of 4680 large cylindrical batteries; Hangke Technology 4680 prototype has been completed and delivered to customers.
