SHANGHAI, Feb 8 - The latest figures released by Korean research firm SNE Research showed that the total installed capacity of electric vehicle battery registered worldwide in 2021 stood at 296.8 GWh, more than double the previous year (102.18%).
SNE noted that the power battery segment started to recover from the third quarter of 2020 and has maintained stable and high growth so far, despite the adverse factors such as the shortage of chip supply and the re-emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The TOP 10 global power battery brands in terms of installed capacity in 2021 are: CATL, LG Energy Solutions, Panasonic, BYD, SK On, Samsung SDI, China Lithium Battery Technology (CALB), Gotion High-Tech, Envision AESC, and SVOLT.

CATL

The market share of CATL has increased significantly to 32.60% from 24.60% in 2020, enhancing its leading position in the market.

The giant released its 2021 Annual Report Preview on January 27: the company expects to achieve a net profit of 14 billion yuan to 16.5 billion yuan, with an increase of 150.75% to 195.52% year-on-year.

In the first three quarters of 2021, CATL' net profit was 7.75 billion yuan. Based on the median of 15.25 billion yuan for this estimated annual performance, the net profit for the fourth quarter of 2021 would be 7.5 billion yuan, i.e. the net profit in the fourth quarter is equivalent to the sum of the first three quarters.

In terms of production capacity, according to incomplete statistics, CATL has landed 10 production bases around the world, including Thuringia, Germany. Together with the joint venture capacity with car companies, CATL's total planned production capacity exceeds 700GWh.

In terms of orders, since 2021, CATL has secured a number of long-term orders, including a 57GWh order from Geely, a 3-year 15GWh order from Fisker in the US, a 5-year order from Jin Kang New Energy, a 4-year order from Tesla, a 10-year long-term strategic cooperation agreement with Great Wall Automobile, a 7-year order from Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles, a 5-year order from FAW Jiefang, and increased supplies to BMW, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Rolls-Royce, etc.

[SMM Analysis] Chinese New Year Off-Season “Reset,” Sodium-Ion Battery Industry Chain Recovery Poised to Begin
February 2026 coincided with the Chinese New Year holiday. Affected by holiday factors, production pace across core segments of China’s sodium-ion battery industry generally slowed, showing an “off-season reset” trend. From cathodes, anodes, and electrolyte to battery cells and end-users, production across all segments declined MoM to varying degrees, while YoY still maintained a certain degree of growth resilience.

[SMM Daily Review: Spot Lithium Carbonate Prices Continued to Decline on March 4] The SMM battery-grade lithium carbonate index price continued to fall from the previous working day. In terms of futures performance, the most-traded contract fluctuated within the range of 146,000–155,700 yuan/mt, while open interest in the most-traded contract decreased by about 600 lots from the previous trading day. In terms of actual transactions, upstream lithium chemical plants’ willingness to sell spot orders remained weak, with strong sentiment to hold back supply and hold prices firm. Morning prices fell rapidly to below 150,000 yuan/mt, boosting purchase willingness among downstream material plants. At present, most enterprises adopted a laddered order-placement strategy to buy on dips. Overall, market inquiries and transactions were relatively active.
