Foxconn, headquartered in Taiwan, said it had worked with the Indonesian Ministry of Investment and several companies to support the Southeast Asian country in developing electric cars, according to foreign media reports.
As Apple's main contract manufacturer, Foxconn has expanded its activities in the field of electric vehicles in recent years, announcing electric vehicle cooperation agreements with US startup Fisker and Thai energy group PTT PCL.
Foxconn said it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Indonesia's Ministry of Investment, Indonesian battery company, PT Indika energy, an energy company, and Gogoro, a Taiwanese supplier of electric scooters, to co-operate on a wide range of electric vehicle investments, including battery manufacturing.
Foxconn said in a statement that the partnership aims to build a "new energy ecosystem" in Indonesia, as well as the development of electric vehicle supporting industries such as energy storage systems, battery-for-power stations and recycling.
According to the statement, under the partnership, Indonesian companies will be given an open "MIH platform" that will provide hardware and software services. However, the statement did not disclose details such as the scale of investment or production plans.
Liu Yangwei, Foxconn chairman, said Foxconn aims to provide parts or services for 10 per cent of the world's electric vehicles by 2025 to 2027. Foxconn, the world's largest contract manufacturer of electronics, is committed to using its assembly technology to reduce car manufacturing and other costs.
