SMM survey: what kind of metal do you like most in 2022?
, African Rainbow Minerals, backed by South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe, agreed to buy Anglo American Platinum's Bokoni platinum mine for 3.5 billion rand.
The deal came after the world's largest platinum miner announced a record dividend this year as earnings were boosted by a rebound in demand from carmakers for their metals. African Rainbow, which has investments from manganese to gold, is looking to take advantage of assets that were sealed off before platinum-group metals soared over the past few years.
"the acquisition and development of Bokoni Platinum will enable us to expand our platinum group metals portfolio." Motsepe said in a statement on Monday.
The company said, African Rainbow plans to invest about 5.3 billion rand over three years and that Bokoni's mining operations will restart in 2023. The project will create about 5000 jobs, half of which will be permanent.
The Bokoni mine, jointly owned by Amplats and Atlatsa Resources, was maintained and maintained in 2017 as the Anglo American division closed lower-margin mines and moved to mechanized operations.
