BYD has the largest number of solid-state battery patents in China.
According to a piece of information circulated on the Internet: it is understood that BYD has passed relevant experiments, solid-state batteries can be mass-produced and loaded at any time, and BYD has research and corresponding patent reserves for all battery routes, such as methanol fuel cells. Hydrogen fuel cell, graphene, silicon negative electrode, lithium metal negative electrode, core-shell positive electrode, solid-state battery and so on.
At present, BYD already has a large number of low-cost, high-safety blade batteries, and then high-cost, high-safety, high-energy-density solid-state batteries to do accumulated strength.
In terms of the number of domestic solid-state battery patents, there is a statistic that BYD ranks first with 76 patents.
The second to sixth places are Jingtao Energy (63 items), Honeycomb Energy (55 items), Weilan New Energy (25 items), Ningde era (21 items) and Yiwei Lithium Energy (9 items).
Vike Lithium noted that as early as August 2017, BYD had applied for an all-solid-state lithium-ion battery cathode composite and solid-state lithium-ion battery invention patent.
In January 2018, BYD said on the interactive platform that the company was actively promoting the commercial use of solid-state battery projects.
In January 2021, another BYD solid-state lithium battery patent was exposed, the invention name is all-solid-state electrolyte and its composition and electrode and all-solid-state lithium-ion battery.
On March 2, BYD released the patent for "a solid-state electrolyte and solid-state lithium battery".
On March 5, BYD suddenly announced two patents related to solid-state batteries, namely, "an electrolyte polymer substrate, a solid-state electrolyte and a preparation method thereof, a lithium-ion battery", "a composite solid-state electrolyte and a solid-state lithium battery".
International automobile companies have laid out solid-state batteries one after another.
The main players in the field of solid-state batteries include three categories: the first is independent research and development by car companies, mainly on behalf of Japanese companies such as Toyota, Honda and Nissan; the second is power battery enterprises. at present, leading power battery enterprises in China, Japan, South Korea and other countries are increasing the research and development of power batteries; the third category is start-ups, many of which have received investment from well-known multinational companies.
There is a voice that, at present, European, American, Japanese and Korean enterprises are in a leading position in the research and development of the next generation solid-state battery, and there is a certain gap between China's solid-state battery industry and it.
Ouyang Minggao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and vice president of the China Electric vehicle Association, said, "from a national point of view, Japan attaches the most importance to all-solid-state batteries, does the best and has the largest scale." Japan has a large national plan and a meticulous division of labor. In the research and development of all-solid-state batteries, China is still in its own stage, without a complete national plan to promote, by contrast, Japan is five years ahead of China. "
In the international market, a number of multinational companies have mentioned the layout of the battery industry when announcing their electric vehicle development plans since 2021, and have formulated solid-state battery business plans to carry out related business layout.
Toyota was one of the first companies to develop solid-state batteries, with the largest number of related technology patents (said to be more than 1000): Toyota plans to achieve small-scale mass production of all-solid-state batteries by 2025, first on hybrid models, and by 2030, achieve sustained and stable mass production of all-solid-state batteries.
Nissan plans to launch an electric model with original all-solid-state batteries by 2028 and plans to build a pilot plant in Yokohama, Japan, in 2024.
As early as 2018, Volkswagen Group invested US $100 million in Quantum Scape, an American solid-state battery company, and cooperated to invest an additional $200 million in 2020. The company went public in September 2020, and Volkswagen owns 31.05% of its class A shares.
BMW Group and Ford Motor announced a joint investment of $139 million in Solid Power, a solid-state battery start-up, in May 2021.
Daimler and Stellantis said in December that they would make a strategic investment and business cooperation with solid-state battery maker Factorial Energy, although Daimler, Stellantis and Factorial have not disclosed the financial details of the investment.
In addition to co-investing in Solid Power with Samsung SDI in 2018, Hyundai also invested in SES, which has a close relationship with General Motors in 2021.
Domestic car companies do not lag behind in the layout of solid-state batteries
BYD mentioned earlier is one of the representatives of domestic enterprises. In fact, the layout of solid-state batteries by domestic enterprises does not lag behind that of international car companies. It may be true that Japan laid out solid-state batteries earlier, but in terms of technical strength, it may not be five years ahead.
In terms of domestic car companies, the current very clear layout of solid-state batteries, including BYD, Xilai Automobile, BAIC New Energy, Dongfeng Automobile, SAIC, Great Wall Automobile and other enterprises.
Xilai held a strategic cooperation agreement signing ceremony with Huineng in Taoyuan, Taiwan in 2019, and the two sides will jointly build a prototype car using Huineng MAB solid-state battery package; in January this year, on the "2020 NIO Day" of Ulay, the first 150kWh solid-state battery was released, announcing that it could achieve ultra-high energy density of 360Wh/kg, and the battery-equipped Xilai ET7 would last for more than 1000 kilometers.
BAIC New Energy launched a pure electric prototype with a solid-state battery system in July 2020, which is the first public drivable solid-state battery prototype in China.
Dongfeng Technology Center and Ganfeng Lithium Power officially signed a contract in July 2021, the two sides discussed the demonstration and operation cooperation of solid-state battery, and signed a demonstration and promotion agreement on solid-state battery E70 model. It is understood that this year, Dongfeng will take the lead to complete the solid-state battery car announcement and complete the vehicle delivery before the Spring Festival.
SAIC has carried out strategic cooperation with solid-state battery start-ups such as Quantum Scape, Solid Energy and Qingtao.
Honeycomb Energy, owned by Great Wall Motor, has also put forward a very specific solid-state battery technology development plan.
Those enterprises that lay out solid-state batteries
According to incomplete statistics, at present, there are more than 50 enterprises in the world in the layout of solid-state battery research and development. In terms of market demand, it is predicted that by 2030, the global demand for solid-state batteries is expected to reach 500GWh.It is conservatively estimated that the market will form a market size of more than 300 billion yuan.
Representative battery companies include BYD, Ningde era, China New Airlines, Guoxuan Hi-Tech, Ganfeng Lithium Industry, Honeycomb Energy, Huineng Technology, Qingtao Energy, Weilan New Energy, LG New Energy, Quantum Scape, and so on.

Summary
With the help of capital, investment in the field of solid-state batteries continues to be hot, both internationally and domestically.
A few days ago, Xiaomi Group, Huawei Technology, IDG Capital and Lurai Capital invested about 500 million yuan in Weilai battery supplier Weilan New Energy, which is valued at 5 billion yuan. Huineng Technology has also recently completed a new round of financing of $326 million (about 2.085 billion yuan), including Chunhua Capital, Danfeng Capital and Softbank Corp. China.
SAIC and Guangzhou Automotive previously led the financing rounds of solid-state battery companies Qingtao Energy in E + round and Etai + round respectively.
Generally speaking, solid-state battery is already walking above the tuyere, and it is a potential but challenging new track for car companies, power battery companies and start-ups.
For the rapidly developing solid-state battery, you don't have to wait for 5-10 years. Please don't be surprised if it comes early.
