[TSMC has begun trial production of 3nm chips Apple two chips will adopt its 3nm process] on December 3, according to the latest report from DigiTimes, TSMC (TSM.N) has begun trial production of chips based on its 3nm process (called N3). It is reported that TSMC will put the 3nm process into mass production by the fourth quarter of 2022 and begin shipping 3nm chips to customers such as AAPL.O and INTC.O in the first quarter of 2023.

On December 3rd, according to the latest report from DigiTimes, TSMC (TSM.N) has begun trial production of chips based on its 3nm process (called N3).

It is reported that TSMC will put the 3nm process into mass production by the fourth quarter of 2022 and begin shipping 3nm chips to customers such as AAPL.O and INTC.O in the first quarter of 2023. The first Apple devices with 3nm chips are expected to debut in 2023, including iPhone 15/Pro models with A17 chips and Apple Silicon Mac computers with M3 chips (all names are tentative).

A few days ago, TSMC showed full confidence in the 3nm production process. Wei Zhe-Jia, president of TSMC, said that more new product designs will be finalized in the first year of 3nm mass production, and trial production is expected in the second half of this year and mass production in the second half of 2022.

Wei also said that due to the complexity of the process and the use of a lot of new equipment, the cost will certainly be higher than that of the 5nm process, and revenue is expected to contribute significantly in the first quarter of 2023, while the enhanced 3nm production schedule will be one year after 3nm.

IC design industry believes that TSMC in order to give customers more choices, and to extend the life of the 5nm family, before 3nm, the introduction of the 4nm process also reflects the increasingly high investment cost of the advanced process, and the mask alone will deter new entrants who have the ability to enter the next generation process. It is estimated that the current cost of 3nm film is as high as 5nm, which is naturally among the top 20 manufacturers in the world.

[SMM Express] Rubaya mining area in North Kivu of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), remains one of the world’s most important sources of coltan, but its strategic importance is matched by significant supply-chain risks. The site has been under the control of the M23 armed group since 2024, with mineral revenues reportedly contributing to the financing of the conflict. Rubaya is estimated to account for a significant share of global coltan supply, making developments there relevant to the wider tantalum market. The situation also highlights the difference between coltan and cobalt risks in the DRC. While cobalt production is concentrated in the southern Copperbelt and is increasingly subject to formalisation and traceability initiatives, coltan from eastern DRC faces a more direct conflict-financing and territorial-control risk. ERG Deploys Digital Twin Technology to Monitor Bolashak Chrome Mine Shaft in Kazakhstan
[SMM Express] Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) has brought shaft-inspection work at its flagship Bolashak chrome mine in-house, with the company's own geotechnical team now conducting laser-scanning surveys of the mine's 1,047-metre deep shaft down to a depth of 627 metres, as part of a predictive-maintenance programme announced 2 July 2026. The work, previously outsourced to third-party contractors, feeds into a digital twin model of the shaft designed to monitor structural condition and reduce risk to personnel and production continuity. Bolashak, part of ERG's Donskoy GOK operation and developed across the Millionnoye and Almaz-Zhemchuzhina deposits, has been in operation since late 2024 and is being ramped toward its full design capacity of 7.5 million tonnes of chrome ore per year — a volume that alone exceeds three times South Africa's entire monthly chrome ore export tonnage. The mine already runs on largely automated systems, including remote-controlled smart drilling rigs and a fully automated hoisting system. The shift to in-house, technology-driven shaft monitoring signals that ERG continues to invest in operational sophistication at Bolashak well after its initial commissioning, reinforcing Kazakhstan's position as a increasingly automated, large-scale chrome ore supplier operating independently of the production challenges currently facing South African and Zimbabwean producers.
