Frank Skapiti (Frank Scarpitti), mayor of Markham, Ontario, Canada, recently tweeted that Tesla will build a factory in the city to produce battery manufacturing equipment and supply the global superfactory (Gigafactory).
Later, it added in a tweet that preparations for the establishment and operation of the plant had been completed.
Tesla's move to set up a lithium equipment factory in Canada is intended to speed up the mass production of 4680 batteries, Bloomberg reported.
Although Tesla did not respond directly to the tweet, the tweet is consistent with the layout of the company's Canadian business announced earlier this month. Tesla also highlighted that the Ontario team is building new custom equipment and will deploy it in factories around the world.
It is worth mentioning that Tesla bought Hibar Systems of Canada in 2019, a lithium equipment manufacturer just minutes from Markham. Andrew Baglino (Andrew Baglino), senior vice president of Tesla, also said on last year's Battery Day that Tesla's "vertical integration" with Hibar and other companies would help speed up battery production and expand the scale of 4680 battery production.
The company has previously revealed that the 4680 battery project is progressing smoothly and is expected to deliver the first cars with 4680 batteries in early 2022. Tesla is working with Panasonic, Samsung SDI, LG Energy and other battery manufacturers to produce 4680 batteries, and the production capacity is expected to reach 100GWh by the end of next year.
It is reported that the first model with 4680 batteries will be Model Y, followed by Cybertruck or Semi;, while super factories in Texas and Berlin are about to start production of Model Y with 4680 batteries.
At present, Tesla is in Tesla Fremont Kato Road plant trial production of 4680, the industry speculation that the company has broken through the bottleneck of mass production; the company also plans to build 4680 battery production lines in Texas super factory (Giga Texas), Berlin super factory (Giga Berlin).
And Teslarati news on the 2nd of this month, there are two trucks loaded with battery production equipment into the Texas super factory storage area, marked as "positive production line 1" and "negative production line 1" respectively. The move may mean that Tesla has begun to install equipment for the 4680 production line and is ready for trial production, the report said.
Looking at the entire industrial chain, in addition to the above-mentioned overseas manufacturers such as Panasonic, LG Energy, and Samsung SDI, a number of domestic manufacturers have also devoted themselves to 4680 R & D one after another:
Bick Battery has released all-pole ear 4680 cylindrical battery in March, and the battery sample is expected to be offline in batch by the end of this year.
StoreDot, an Israeli start-up battery company, has announced that it has developed 4680 cylindrical batteries that can be fully charged in 10 minutes. The company has signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Yiwei LiNeng to cooperate on power batteries.
JAC Motor and CBAK Energy Technology have signed a three-year joint product development strategy agreement to jointly develop 4680 lithium batteries and battery packs.
