Global semiconductor wafer shipments rose 3.3% in the third quarter of 2021 to 3.649 billion square inches, an all-time high, according to a report by the International Semiconductor Industry Association ((SEMI)).
SEMI noted that shipments of silicon wafers reached a record high in the third quarter, with an increase in shipments of silicon wafers of all sizes, supporting a variety of semiconductor components needed for the modern economy.
In addition, SEMI said it expects demand for silicon wafers to remain high as many new fabs will be added in the next few years.
It is understood that in the market terminal application strong pull goods, silicon wafer supply continues to be tight. Recently, silicon wafer suppliers such as Global Crystal, Japan's Shin-Etsu and Japan's Shengo (SUMCO) all expect that the supply and demand of their products will continue to fall short of demand until 2023. Among them, Shenggao announced that it would spend 228.7 billion yen to build a new factory in Japan to expand production.
