The number of new registrations of electric vehicles worldwide has exceeded 4.3 million in the first three quarters of this year, accounting for 7 per cent of global new car sales, according to industry body statistics. It is worth mentioning that in the fast-growing electric vehicle markets such as China and the European Union, new electric vehicle sales account for more than 10%, and are increasing month by month.
Domestically, data show that wholesale sales of new energy passenger vehicles reached 355000 in September, with a penetration rate of 20.4% in the passenger car market; from January to September 2021, sales of new energy passenger vehicles reached 2.045 million, with a penetration rate of 13.7%, more than double the 5.8% in the same period last year. According to EU data, figures released by the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers show that 1.5887 million new energy vehicles were sold in the EU from January to September this year, and the penetration rate of new energy vehicles has reached 18.9%.
With reference to previous years' experience, the fourth quarter will be a stronger period for new energy vehicle sales, with global new energy vehicle sales expected to exceed 6 million for the whole year, and the Chinese market is expected to reach 3 million.
The rapid growth of electric vehicle sales naturally drives the rise of the installed capacity of power batteries. According to data from the Power Battery Application Branch, in the first three quarters of this year, the installed capacity of power batteries in the Chinese market was about 95.26 GWH, an increase of 178.8% over the same period last year. Global data are also expected to be sizeable.
According to Battery China, the world's best-selling TOP10 electric vehicles sold more than 1.3 million units in the first three quarters of this year, accounting for about 30 per cent of global electric vehicle sales. The best-selling TOP10 electric passenger cars in the first three quarters of this year are Tesla Model 3, Wuling Hongguang MINI EV, Tesla Model Y, Volkswagen ID.4, BYD Qin Plus PHEV, BYD Han EV, ideal One EREV, Chang'an Mercedes-Benz EV, Volkswagen ID.3, Guangzhou Automobile Aion.S.
As can be seen from the above table, Tesla, BYD and Volkswagen all have two models shortlisted for TOP10, while SAIC GM Wuling occupies the second position with a Hongguang MINI EV,.
In addition, it can also be found from the above table that six of the TOP10 models come from China's own brands. In addition, China is also one of the main producing areas of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.
It is worth noting that Renault Zoe, Euler Black Cat and Hyundai Kona EV, which appeared in TOP10 in the first half of the year, fell out of the top 10 and were replaced by BYD Qin Plus PHEV, ideal One EREV and Changan Mercedes-Benz EV.
On the one hand, the rapid growth of electric vehicle sales has led to the growth of the installed capacity of relevant battery suppliers; on the other hand, the changes in the ranking of related model sales also affect the changes in the installed capacity and ranking of relevant power battery enterprises. At the same time, as the most concerned brand in the market, hot-selling models also have a great impact on the future installed capacity growth of battery enterprises. It is believed that in the future, with the "competition" of battery enterprises' cooperative customers and matching hot-selling models, the battery market pattern will also change.
Model 3 battery supporting enterprises: Ningde era, Panasonic Battery, LG New Energy
At present, Tesla's battery suppliers are Ningde Times, LG New Energy and Panasonic batteries. Online BYD will also enter its supply chain, but the two sides have not yet confirmed.
At present, Tesla (North America) battery is still exclusively supplied by Panasonic battery.
Tesla (Shanghai) factory is mainly supported by Ningde era and LG new energy. Up to now, the Model 3 and Model Y standard battery of Tesla (Shanghai) factory are matched by Ningde era, the battery type is lithium iron phosphate battery, and the long-lasting version is the cylindrical 21700 battery matched with LG new energy.
According to the data of the Power Battery Application Branch, in the first three quarters of this year, Tesla (Shanghai) led the installed capacity of Ningde era about 12.82GWH, and led the installed capacity of LG new energy about 5.92GWh.
Hongguang MINI EV battery supporting enterprises: Guoxuan Hi-Tech, Xingheng Power supply, Ningde Times, Penghui Energy, Ruipu Energy
Hongguang MINI EV sold about 288873 vehicles in the first three quarters. The supporting battery enterprises mainly include Guoxuan Hi-Tech, Xingheng Power supply, Ningde Times, Penghui Energy and Ruipu Energy.
From the point of view of the matching battery technology route of the model, it is mainly lithium iron phosphate and multi-component composite lithium, its China Xuanghui Tech, Ningde era, Penghui Energy and Ruipu Energy provide lithium iron phosphate batteries, while Xingheng Power supply provides multi-component composite lithium batteries.
Model Y battery supporting enterprises: Ningde era, Panasonic Battery, LG New Energy
, Model Y global sales of 253833 vehicles in the first three quarters, an increase is very significant, has risen to the third place, mainly Tesla (Shanghai) factory Model Y put into mass production.
At present, Model Y battery suppliers are also Panasonic batteries, LG New Energy and Ningde Times. Among them, Panasonic battery is mainly equipped for Tesla American factory, while LG New Energy and Ningde era are mainly equipped for Tesla (Shanghai) factory. Panasonic battery and LG new energy supply ternary battery, Ningde era supply lithium iron phosphate battery. With the hot sale of the Model Y standard continued version, it is expected that the battery share of Model Y in Ningde era will surpass that of LG new energy in the future.
Volkswagen ID.4, ID.3 battery supporting enterprises: LG new energy, Ningde era
Volkswagen sold 73632 ID.4 and 53041 ID.3 in the first three quarters, ranking fourth and ninth, respectively. The ID.4 ranking rose one place from June.
In terms of battery matching, ID.4 is mainly provided by LG New Energy and Ningde Times, its European factories are mainly provided by LG New Energy, and its Chinese factories are mainly provided by Ningde Times.
BYD Qin Plus PHEV battery supporting enterprise: Fudi battery
BYD Qin Plus PHEV sold 58710 vehicles in the first three quarters. The battery is exclusively supplied by Fudi Battery, owned by BYD.
The model is a plug-in hybrid, and thanks to BYD's DMI super hybrid technology, it has performed well in terms of fuel economy and battery life, which has led to a rapid rise in sales since the model was launched this year.
BYD Han EV Battery supporting Enterprise: Fudi Battery
BYD Han EV sold 58262 vehicles in the first three quarters. The battery is exclusively supplied by BYD's Fudi battery, which is a square lithium iron phosphate blade battery.
