According to foreign media reports, Indian Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkarii said at a secret meeting of "India Today" (India Today) on October 8 that he asked Tesla to avoid selling Chinese-made electric cars in India before entering the Indian market. Tesla should "produce, sell and export cars from India" and rely on local suppliers.
"We ask Tesla to introduce his technology and expertise to help India build an ecosystem of electric vehicles instead of importing cars from China," Gadkari said. Considering that India is a huge market and there is a demand for electric cars, our government will do everything possible to help. " It is reported that the Tesla model sells for about 3.5 million rupees ($46671) in India.
When talking about the development of electric vehicles in India in the next few years, Gadkari stressed that India's "Aatmanirbhar" program is developing rapidly and that the production and export of electric vehicle batteries in India will soon become a reality, which will help Tesla enter the Indian market. Gadkari also said that Tesla's advanced technology and smooth operation have contributed to the development of the "Aatmanirbhar" program, and the ministry hopes to make India the largest market for the automobile industry.
(note: the Atmanirbhar plan is a plan put forward by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deal with the epidemic and revitalize the economy. India has invested 200 million rupees, equivalent to 10% of India's GDP. )
At the meeting, Gadkari also talked about the "Mission Electric" plan, which will help lay out charging piles for electric vehicles on a large scale in India.
Earlier this year, Musk confirmed Tesla's entry into the Indian market on Twitter. With Tesla registering an office in Bangalore, India, the company has made positive progress in entering the Indian market. Tesla is also reported to be addressing the new exhibition hall in upscale areas of Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.
Tesla has reportedly asked the Indian government to reduce import tariffs on Tesla electric vehicles to 40 per cent from the current 60 per cent. In addition, the company also asked the Indian government to waive the 10% social welfare surcharge.
It is reported that in August this year, Tesla received approval to produce or import four models in India. Tesla already makes cars in super factories in the United States and China and is waiting for final approval from new factories in Germany.
