White Phosphorus Supply Fell Sharply amid Energy Consumption Control in Yunnan

The Yunnan NDRC Energy Conservation Work Panel issued the "Notice on Striving to Fulfil Tasks on Dual Control of Energy Consumption. The local white phosphorus is a typical energy using product, with power consumption per mt as high as 15,000 kWh. Environmental protection supervision remains strict. The average monthly output of white phosphorus production line from September to December 2021 is required to not exceed 10% of the output in August.

SHANGHAI, Sep 17 (SMM) — The Yunnan NDRC Energy Conservation Work Panel issued the "Notice on Striving to Fulfil Tasks on Dual Control of Energy Consumption. The local white phosphorus is a typical energy using product, with power consumption per mt as high as 15,000 kWh. Environmental protection supervision remains strict. The average monthly output of white phosphorus production line from September to December 2021 is required to not exceed 10% of the output in August.

High prices of white phosphorus are supported by production restrictions and rigid demand from downstream producers. The production capacity of white phosphorus is located in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Hubei, accounting over 90% of the total in China.

According to SMM survey, individual plants have suspended production while others maintained low-load operation and suspended offering quotations. The capacity in Yunnan accounts over 40% of the total. Domestic production capacity will cut more than 36% amid the energy consumption control. The output will create a record low as Yunnan implements power rationing system in September. Orders for glyphosate and white phosphorus continued to be bullish with the upcoming of high season. White phosphorus was quoted with over 60,000 yuan/mt, up over 100% from early September.

Due to the irrational price hike of phosphoric acid, some iron phosphate companies began to reduce production or stopped supplying small orders from September 16, while other companies stopped offering quotations, indicating that iron phosphate prices are expected to rise to more than 20,000 yuan/mt in H2.

Hoenergy & Fengdian Launch 5.175 MW/15 MWh ESS Project for Yangzhou Steel Plant
Recently, Hoenergy worked closely with Fengdian Technology to tailor a 5.175 MW/15 MWh industrial and commercial ESS project for a steel enterprise in Yangzhou. The project was officially connected to the grid and put into operation, leveraging smart energy technologies to forge new competitive advantages for the enterprise and inject fresh momentum into the green transformation of the steel industry. With a total capacity of 5.175 MW/15 MWh, the project adopts a 10 kV high-voltage-side grid-connection model to connect to the plant’s power grid. Its core configuration includes three sets of Hoenergy D-Ocean 5.016 MWh liquid-cooled DC cabins and three sets of 1,725 kVA inverter and step-up integrated cabins, forming an efficient and safe ESS. At the same time, the ESS also features emergency backup power capabilities, enabling rapid response in the event of power grid failures, ensuring production continuity, and reducing the economic losses caused by power outages.

SK On Consolidates Georgia Operations into Single Production System
SK On will transition to a unified production system centered on its SK Battery America (SKBA) operations in Georgia to improve efficiency in North America. According to the company on the 3rd, starting April 6 (local time), production volumes from SKBA’s first plant will be transferred to the second plant. In addition, part of the second plant’s production lines will be converted from electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing to energy storage system (ESS) production. The Georgia Plant 1 has an annual capacity of 10GWh and began commercial operations in the first quarter of 2022, while Plant 2 has a capacity of 12GWh and started operations in the fourth quarter of 2022.
