Shipments of products related to TV may become the "main force" of mini LED applications are expected to increase 9 times this year.

With the mainstream terminal manufacturers have launched new products this year, mini-LED penetration gradually accelerated, TCL vice president of industry, TCL electronic CEO Zhang Shaoyong said bluntly yesterday that "mini LED is the future of the big screen."

According to the latest report from research institute Omdia, global mini LED TV shipments are expected to reach 5 million this year, 10 times that of last year (500000)., mini LED is expected to account for 2.2% of total TV shipments, up from 0.02% last year. Shipments of, mini LED backlit TVs are expected to reach 25 million units in 2025, accounting for 10 per cent of the entire TV market.

Behind the surge in shipments is a sharp increase in the number of mainstream players. Back in 2020, there was only one TCL that produced commercial mini-LED TVs. Since the beginning of this year, Samsung has taken the lead in launching QLED mini LED TVs, which is expected to produce 2 million units for the whole year; LG showed QNED mini LED TVs; and at the end of July, Huawei also released its first mini-LED backlit TV, which sells for 24999 yuan. In addition, TCL, Xiaomi, Hisense, Philips and other manufacturers have also announced their own mini LED products, prices ranging from 10,000 to tens of thousands of yuan.

At the same time, mini LED displays also began to be favored by terminal manufacturers, Samsung, Dell, Lenovo and other new products have been released, positioning in the ultra-high-end display market.

By comparison, however, the application of mini-LED in consumer electronics is a little slow. Apple, the industry's bellwether, is taking the lead, launching the first iPad Pro,Q3 with a mini LED screen in April and a new mini LED MacBook Pro. Guo Mingyi, an analyst at Tianfeng International, pointed out that Apple has a clear trend in promoting mini-LED, and it is expected that after the release of a number of mini LED products, the company will lead a new display trend and drive other manufacturers to follow, thus bringing considerable incremental space to the entire market.

From the above product price point of view, the current high cost is still a major problem that mini-LED has to face. Take the high-density AM mini LED backlight as an example, its cost is 4 times that of the ordinary LCD. However, the Omdia report predicts that the cost gap between, mini LED backlit LCD and regular LCD will narrow rapidly over time. In 2025, with the use of low-density mini LED backlight and optimized LED chip design, the cost will be reduced to 1.2x, which is expected to accelerate the mini LED backlight permeability.

A number of mini LED industry chain companies have also revealed related business progress recently:

TCL said yesterday that it expects to invest at least 2 billion yuan worldwide to set up 10 complete machine production lines to achieve the 2024 target mini LED smart screen annual production capacity of 10 million units.

Deep Tianma said that the company's mini LED products are mainly aimed at the backlight application of the display screen, and the company has independently developed drive algorithms for different architectures to provide customers with a variety of solutions, mainly for on-board customers.

San'an Optoelectronics said that the, mini LED chip is one of the main directions of the company's LED product structure upgrade. The company will gradually release miniLED production capacity, the original capacity is basically full production;

Jufei Optoelectronics began to supply mini LED products in bulk last year, and now there are terminal products with Mini LED backlight to enter the market.

Ruifeng Optoelectronics mini LED has begun to ship in bulk, and terminal products equipped with the company's mini LED backlight products are available. It is expected that there will be more in the second half of the year. In the future, the company will expand production of Synchronize according to customer demand.
