[Luoyang Molybdenum plans to invest US $2.5 billion to double copper and cobalt production at the Tenke Fungurume mine] China's molybdenum industry will invest US $2.51 billion to double copper and cobalt production at its giant Tenke Fungurume mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The project is expected to be completed and launched in 2023, including the construction of three ore production lines. The company said in a filing to the Shanghai Stock Exchange that it expected to increase the mine's average annual copper production by 200000 tons and cobalt production by 17000 tons.

Luoyang Molybdenum will invest US $2.51 billion to double copper and cobalt production at (TFM), its giant Tenke Fungurume mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The project is expected to be completed and launched in 2023, including the construction of three ore production lines. The company said in a filing to the Shanghai Stock Exchange that it expected to increase the mine's average annual copper production by 200000 tons and cobalt production by 17000 tons.

Luoyang Molybdenum began trial production in a separate expansion of the mine in July and is expected to produce 88500 tons of cathode copper and 7280 tons of cobalt hydroxide. It also has a design capacity to handle 3.3 million tons of ore per year.

The new investment is financed by the Chinese miner's own funds and bank loans, both of which have soared this year as the economy rebounded from the covid-19 pandemic, having a positive impact on demand.

Copper on the London Metal Exchange has risen 23 per cent so far this year after hitting an all-time high of nearly $10750 a tonne in May. Copper prices rose on Friday after trade unions in EsCondida, Chile, the world's largest copper mine, said workers were ready to strike, sparking concerns about a reduction in copper supply.

The price of cobalt, a key component of batteries that power electric cars, rose 64 per cent to about $52000 a tonne.

Luoyang Molybdenum acquired a controlling stake in Tenke Fungurume, one of the world's largest copper and cobalt mines, from US mining company Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE:: FCX)) in 2016 for $2.65 billion. In 2019, it spent another $1.14 billion to increase its stake to 80 per cent.

In 2020, TFM produced about 182600 tons of copper and 15400 tons of cobalt. The output is expected to be higher this year.

This week, against the backdrop of fluctuating upward copper prices, the secondary copper industry chain showed a complex situation in which extremely tight upstream raw material supply coexisted with persistent negative margins for downstream finished products. In the secondary copper rod market, SMM data showed that the operating rate fell further to 5.45% this week, down 0.38 percentage points MoM and 25.43 percentage points YoY

Chile's Water Crisis Threatens Atacama's Copper and Lithium Mining Amid 14-Year Drought
Chile’s most pressing crisis at present is the issue of water resources. The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the driest regions in the world and also the core area for copper and lithium ore extraction. The local area has experienced a drought for as long as 14 years, and reservoir storage has fallen to only about 30%. For miners, water resources are not a secondary issue, but an indispensable key production factor in such processes as ore processing, dust suppression, and equipment cooling. The decline in ore grade has further exacerbated the predicament

Trump Adjusts Metal Tariffs, Applies 50% Rate to Consumer Prices Under Section 232, Details Unclear
US President Trump adjusted the national security tariffs on imports of steel, aluminum, and copper, lowering the tariff rates on derivative products made from these metals, streamlining compliance procedures, and preventing the declared value of imports from being understated.A senior Trump administration official said that, under a proclamation signed by Trump, the US would continue to maintain a 50% import tariff on imports of metal commodities such as steel, aluminum, and copper pursuant to Section 232 of the Trade Act of 1974, but would apply this rate to the price paid by US consumers. It is currently unclear how the selling price—and the resulting tariffs—would be determined.
