Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on the earnings call that Tesla is rewriting automotive software to support alternative chips in response to the global chip shortage.
He said Tesla will use other chips instead and write firmware for it in a few weeks, which is not only a matter of replacing the chip, but also rewriting the software.
Tesla says this approach has helped the company maintain a high level of production, delivering more than 200,000 cars to customers in the past three months.
Tesla broke a number of records when he released his financial results for the second quarter of 2021 on July 26, local time. Tesla's second-quarter net profit was $1.14 billion (GAAP), exceeded $1 billion for the first time, more than double the $438 million in the first quarter and more than 10 times the net profit in the same period last year. The company's total revenue also rose 98% to $11.96 billion from $6.04 billion in the same period last year, which the company attributes in part to a surge in car sales.
Mr Musk said the biggest problem this quarter was the module that controls airbags and seat belts, and Tesla's growth rate for the rest of the year depended on the slowest parts of the supply chain, including the various chips used in the car.
