In terms of trend, 428100 new energy vehicles were sold this month, second only to the 479700 sold in March from January to May this year, and are still in a high range. However, considering that the sharp increase in sales in March is mainly due to factors such as the Spring Festival and the epidemic in January and February, some demand has been suppressed, and car companies usually release volume at the end of the quarter due to factors such as production scheduling and seasonal delivery. The sales of new energy vehicles in May and February are not as good as those in March, but the overall performance is better than that in the first quarter, and at present, the sales of new energy vehicles in the first two months of the second quarter show a gradual trend, which is still in the upward space. It is worth noting that sales this month increased by 201.92% compared with the same period last year, less than the same increase of 252.87% in April. This is also the first decline in year-on-year growth this year, mainly because China, as the largest market for new energy vehicles, basically controlled the domestic epidemic in May 2020, the domestic economic activity gradually returned to the normal level, and the subsidy policy for new energy vehicles was issued at the end of April. The fixed period was extended to the end of 2022, and local new energy vehicle stimulus policies were introduced one after another, leading to a pick-up in domestic sales. At the same time, driven by various policies in Europe, the market gradually recovered, and overall global sales rose, pushing up last year's base, resulting in a decline in year-on-year growth in May.

From the perspective of countries and regions, the world's three major new energy vehicle markets all had varying degrees of volume in May 2021. A total of 204000 new energy vehicles were sold in China, up 6.1% from 192000 in March. From historical data, we can see that in nearly half a year, sales fluctuations caused by special time points such as February have been discarded. Domestic sales of new energy vehicles generally fluctuate in the range of 18-200000, maintaining a steady upward trend. The European market sold a total of 155000 new energy vehicles in May, up 17.6% from 132000 in April, and the overall performance was slightly better than the global market average of 11.54%. The sharp release of Tesla Model 3 and Skoda Enyaq iV models in May gave a significant boost to the European car market. Among them, the Model 3 sold 8700 vehicles in the European market in May, up 650% from 1169 in April, surpassing Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4, to re-top the European sales list. On the other hand, the US market, recently affected by Biden's new energy stimulus policy, also saw a sharp rise in sales this month, with 57800 new energy vehicles sold in May, up nearly 40% from 41400 in April. it has become the main driver of the growth of the global new energy vehicle market this month.

From the perspective of global market share, in May, in the new energy passenger car market, the European and American markets expanded rapidly, and the growth rate was better than the average level of the global new energy car market, diluting China's market share to a certain extent. Among them, the share of the European market increased by 1.2 percentage points to 36.2% from 35% in April, while the share of the US market increased by 2.5 percentage points to 13.5% compared with April. The share of China's market and other countries and regions fell by 3.3 and 0.3 percentage points respectively. In terms of trend, China and Europe still account for 83.8% of the total global sales of new energy vehicles, but the current Biden administration in the United States is paying more and more attention to the new energy vehicle industry, and its intention to catch up with central Europe is obvious. with the implementation of its $174 billion stimulus package and the improvement of related new energy subsidy policies, the future market of new energy vehicles in the United States may enter a rapid development zone.

From the model point of view, May models, with the exception of Wuling Hongguang Mini and Volkswagen ID.4, the rest of the models show varying degrees of upward trend. Among them, Tesla finally picked up in May after a previous decline in sales. Model 3 and Model Y sold 40700 and 28300 vehicles respectively, which accounted for the top two sales of new energy passenger vehicles in the world in May, up 26.0% and 121.3% respectively from the previous month. According to the data, sales of Model 3 in China and the United States are generally stable, while delivery volume in Europe has risen sharply due to the arrival of shipping dates in Hong Kong. Model Y performed well in both the Chinese and US markets this month, selling 14700 and 12700 new energy vehicles respectively, up 122 per cent and 135 per cent respectively. Mainly due to the completion of domestic factory equipment upgrading, production and marketing returned to the normal level, superimposed U. S. policy-driven sales upward. And Wuling Hongguang Mini with its stable performance in the Chinese market, sales of 26700 vehicles, ranking third. It is worth noting that in May, due to the policy of new energy vehicles going to the countryside, Changan Benz led to demand in tier 3 and 4 cities, and sales soared. In May, sales of 8380 new energy vehicles, an increase of 119%, ranked fourth, surpassing ID.4 and BYD.

In terms of the overall trend, the new energy vehicle market rose in May compared with April, mainly due to demand from Europe and the United States. With the implementation of the Biden government's new energy subsidy policy and the $174 billion stimulus package, sales in the US market in the future may see rapid growth, and it has become an important driver of the uptrend in global sales of new energy vehicles, which has led to an upward trend in sales, while China has also maintained a steady rise in sales, with the implementation of the Biden government's new energy subsidy policy and $174 billion stimulus package.

[SMM Analysis] Restructuring of Lithium Carbonate Supply-Demand Pattern: Industry Chain Shifts Under Policy Dividends and Resource Constraints
When we shifted our perspective away from price fluctuations, we found that the lithium carbonate market in Q1 2026 was undergoing deeper structural changes. These changes were reflected not only in price changes, but also in policy-driven dynamics on the demand side, geopolitical constraints on the supply side, and the quiet transformation of lithium carbonate's role within the entire new energy industry chain.

[SMM Analysis] Lithium Carbonate Q1 "N-Shaped" Oscillation: Tight Balance Pattern Amid Tug-of-War Between Upstream and Downstream
In Q1 2026, China's lithium carbonate market entered a phase of fluctuating at highs, building on the strong rally at the 2025 year-end. Prices exhibited a typical "N-shaped" wide-ranging trajectory: a significant rise in January, a slight pullback in February, and another sharp rise in March. Behind this trajectory was a concentrated manifestation of the ongoing tug-of-war between upstream spot order holders holding back from selling and downstream buyers restocking on dips.
