Ford Motor Company will slash its North American car production in July as a continuing shortage of semiconductor chips affects the global auto industry.
The company said on Wednesday that eight Ford plants, including six in the United States, would stop or cut production at different times from next month to early August because of a lack of cores. The products affected include the Ford Bronco Sport 150, the Ford Mustang and the Ford Explorer.
In addition, Ford said production of Ford Ranger pickup trucks and the new Ford Bronco SUV at its Michigan assembly plant would be reduced in the weeks from July 5 to July 26 due to a "shortage of unrelated parts." A spokesman for the company declined to give further details.
This is Ford's latest production cut. Earlier this year, Ford said it expected production to fall by about 50 per cent in the second quarter because of a lack of cores. The company has noted that it expects to lose $2.5 billion and about 1.1 million vehicles this year as a result of the problem.
Ford said in a statement on Wednesday that the latest production cuts due to chip shortages are intended to give priority to "cars that are not assembled with specific parts due to an industry-wide shortage of semiconductors."
The specific vehicles and factories affected are as follows:
1. Ford Explorer and Lincoln Nautilus SUV: 's Chicago assembly plant in Illinois will be shut down for four weeks from July 5, with two shifts in the week of August 2.
two。 Ford Fmur150 pickup truck: the Dearborn truck plant in Michigan will be staffed by two groups of workers for three weeks starting July 12.
3. Ford Mustang: 's Pingyan assembly plant in Michigan will be shut down for two weeks starting July 12.
4. The Ford Bronco Sport SUV and the upcoming Ford Maverick mini pickup: the Emosio assembly plant in Mexico will run only one shift during the week of July 12 and July 19.
The 5.F-150 and Transit van:F-150 production lines will be shut down for two weeks July 12 and 19, while the Transit van production line will stop production at the assembly plant in Kansas City, Missouri during the week of July 19.
6. Ford Super Duty trucks, Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs: Kentucky truck plants in Kentucky will be shut down for the week of July 12, with two shifts for three weeks starting July 19.
7. Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair: 's assembly plant in Louisville, Kentucky will reduce working hours during the week of July 19th.
8. Ford Edge: 's Oakville assembly plant in Ontario, Canada, will not produce Ford Edge for three weeks starting July 19.
Previously, according to consulting firm AlixPartners, the continuing shortage of semiconductor chips is expected to cost the global auto industry $110 billion in revenue and 3.9 million vehicles in 2021.
