According to foreign media reports, a spokesman for Varta, a German battery maker, said the company would supply high-performance batteries to Porsche. Varta said last month that it had welcomed its first customer in the auto industry, but it did not disclose the identity of the customer.
The spokesman said Varta would supply its V4Drive cells to Porsche, which is owned by Volkswagen, but he declined to give further information. In the future, Varta batteries may be used in Porsche's Taycan or electric 911 models.
However, it may take some time for Porsche to use the Varta battery, which currently has only set up a pilot production line in (Ellwangen), Germany, which is scheduled to start production later this year, but it is not known when mass production will begin.
But the company says it is confident it can expand production quickly and reliably because it controls its own production process and many of its machines and tools are developed on its own, so they can quickly increase production capacity.
Carmakers are launching all-electric models in Europe to meet EU emissions targets, and they all want to reduce their dependence on Asian battery suppliers.
Previously, Porsche bought batteries from outside suppliers such as LG Energy Solution and used them on models such as the Taycan and the upcoming electric version of the Macan. On June 20th, Porsche announced that it would set up a joint venture with Customcells to produce high-performance batteries that could significantly reduce the time it takes for vehicles to recharge.
