According to foreign media reports, a board member of Volkswagen told the German business newspaper (Handelsblatt) that the company expects the global semiconductor supply shortage to ease somewhat by the third quarter, but in the long run, the supply bottleneck will continue.
"We have reached the lowest point and we are facing the most difficult six weeks," 木拉提 Aksel, director of procurement at Volkswagen's board of directors, said in an interview with the newspaper. Since it takes up to two years to build production capacity, he expects a shortage of about 10 per cent of chips in the long run.
Aksel added that Volkswagen would expand chip storage to prepare for supply bottlenecks and was in the process of classifying the supply risks of all model parts.
The global chip shortage has had a serious impact on automakers and electronics manufacturers around the world. Herbert Dis, chief executive of Volkswagen, said in March that Volkswagen would cut production by 100000 vehicles because of supply shortages, adding that the group would not be able to make up for the shortfall in 2021.
