Prices of high-grade NPI against stainless steel scrap declined, but still enjoyed cost-effectiveness

Discounts of high-grade NPI against stainless steel scrap averaged at 122 yuan/mtu, which was slightly lower than the previous week, but the price per mtu remained cost-effective.

SHANGHAI, May 26 (SMM) — Discounts of high-grade NPI against stainless steel scrap averaged at 122 yuan/mtu, which was slightly lower than the previous week, but the price per mtu remained cost-effective. The discounts fell last week as stainless steel scrap prices trended lower with stainless steel costs in the second half of last week and cost effectiveness rose slightly. But high-grade NPI was more economical.

High-grade NPI accounted for 35,800 mt in Ni content, down 6.89% from January, as the COVID-19 outbreak deterred shipments of adjuvant to high-grade NPI plants. Substantial production cut at stainless steel mills in February depressed prices of high-grade NPI, which added to cost pressure at NPI producers and promoted them to reduce output.
