Recently, it has been reported that Samsung Electronics plans to operate the P3 production line of the Pingze factory three months ahead of schedule in response to the global chip shortage.

Yoon Seong-jin, president of Samsung electronics supplier EcoPro HN, said on a conference call on Tuesday that Samsung had asked the company to provide filter products by December, rather than the previously agreed deadline of early 2022, THE ELEC reported.

Due to recent chip shortages, Samsung Electronics plans to start operating the P3 production line at the Pyeongze plant three months ahead of schedule, Yoon Seong-jin said.

It is reported that Samsung Electronics plans to build a total of six chip production lines at its Pingze plant. Construction of the P3 chip production line began in the second half of last year, but capacity and investment have not yet been announced.

The production line is likely to be used to produce memory chips or contract chips, according to people familiar with the matter. P3 is expected to start operating in the first half of 2023. However, due to the current global chip shortage, the plan may be advanced to early 2023, or even 2022.

Samsung had been expected to unveil its P3 investment plan earlier this year, but the plan was delayed because of the imprisonment of its vice-chairman, Lee Jae-yong, according to a person familiar with the matter.

According to sources, Samsung has recently installed the equipment of its research laboratory on the production line of the Huacheng chip factory. At present, people from all walks of life generally expect the South Korean chip industry to expand its production capacity, from Samsung to suppliers. The industry predicts that the expenditure of the semiconductor industry this year may be very large, and it is expected to happen in the near future.
