Executives from semiconductors, automobiles and technology gathered with White House officials on Monday to discuss the growing global shortage of semiconductors. No substantive decision was made at the meeting.

At the meeting, Biden stressed that his chip support plan had bipartisan support, and Biden read out letters from 23 senators and 42 members of the House of Representatives who supported his $50 billion semiconductor manufacturing and research proposal.

In addition to the chip issue, the meeting also discussed supporting the automotive industry's transition to clean energy, creating jobs and ensuring the competitiveness of the US economy.

White House Press Secretary Jepsaki (Jen Psaki) said at a news conference that the chip shortage is a national security issue, and the White House hopes to work closely with the industry to prevent chip shortages from happening again.

Intel CEO Pat Kissinger (Pat Gelsinger) said in an interview after the meeting that the White House and Congress are actively working to support the semiconductor industry through more domestic manufacturing, research and development, and the establishment of professional teams.

Automobile and electronic equipment manufacturers "compete for favor"

It is worth noting that automakers and electronic equipment manufacturers are wrangling at the meeting over how to allocate support funds.

Carmakers are seeking to prioritize some of the money to car chips, warning that there could be a shortfall of 1.3 million cars and light trucks this year if the US car and light truck industry is not given priority. But electronics makers that make computers and mobile phones say that lack of cores can also affect them so much that they can't just do things for specific industries.

Although the White House has not taken a public position on the issue, it has privately told semiconductor industry regulators that the White House does not support special treatment for a particular industry, according to people familiar with the matter.

The "chip summit" is fully known as the "CEO Summit on Semiconductor and supply chain elasticity." US President Joe Biden, White House National Security adviser Jack Sullivan (Jake Sullivan), National Economic Council Director Brian Deiss (Brian Deese), Commerce Secretary Genna Raimundo (Gina Raimondo) and others all attended the meeting.

As for the company, senior executives of General Motors, Ford, GE Core, Parka, NXP, TSMC, AT&T, Samsung, Google parent company Alphabet, Dell, Intel, Medtronic, Hewlett-Packard and Micron also attended the meeting.
