The identity of Apple's energy storage battery supplier was finally revealed on Thursday, and Apple will join forces with Tesla to use Tesla's large energy storage battery Megapack to store electricity generated by California's solar power plants.
Apple announced on Wednesday that it would build a solar storage facility in California next to the California Flats solar device in southeastern Monterey County, about 100 miles from its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. In the future, it will be able to store 240MW hours of energy, enough for more than 7000 families in a day, but the identity of Apple's partner was unclear at the time.
The Verge first reported on the cooperation between the two companies on Thursday. According to documents submitted last year, Apple's energy storage facility project, which was approved by the Monterey County Supervisory Board in 2020, will consist of 85 Tesla large energy storage battery Megapack to provide power to Apple headquarters.
Meanwhile, Monterey County Planning Director confirmed in an email to The Verge that Apple will use Tesla batteries.
Although Tesla has been famous for electric cars, he has been expanding his energy business over the past few years. Tesla entered the solar business by buying SolarCity, for $2.6 billion in 2016. According to Tesla's financial report, "energy production and storage" accounted for 6 per cent of total revenue in 2020, an increase of 30 per cent since 2019.
Tesla has two main businesses: automobile and energy, and the energy business with a weak sense of existence is not well known to the outside world.
