On the afternoon of February 19, Xiaomi Group was revealed to be "certain to build cars" and is expected to be led by Lei Jun, the founder of the group. As soon as the news was announced, Xiaomi's share price rose, reaching HK $32.30 at one point, with a market capitalization of nearly HK $800 billion.

Later, the official response of Xiaomi Group said, "wait a minute, not yet", which is very intriguing.

In fact, rumors about Xiaomi building cars have been frequently seen on the Internet in recent years. The earlier one was in 2014, when a spy photo of "Xiaomi car" was suddenly exposed on the Internet. Xiaomi was thought to be interested in building a car, but it was eventually denied by Lei Jun. In July 2017, Xiaomi signed a strategic cooperation agreement with BAIC, which led to the resurgence of the "Xiaomi car-building" incident, which also came to an end.

But it is precisely this uncertain and undeniable "ambiguous" attitude that makes many people disillusioned with Xiaomi car building again and again.

In June 2020, the official Weibo of Xiaomi Mall released a poster with a clear outline of the car in the middle, with the caption "make a car?" We are serious! " At the same time, the main body of Weibo wrote, "seriously, there will be a new product tomorrow." After the message was issued, "Xiaomi car-making" once again triggered a hot discussion in the industry.

But soon the Weibo post was deleted. Then the general manager of the public relations department of Xiaomi Group responded on the topic of "building a car", saying that "there is no thing, it is Xiaomi Mall's new media students who were wrong and clever," and said that Xiaomi actually made an intelligent remote control car and reengraved the image of Giemney as a tough cross-country general through the 1:16 ratio. In spite of this, the rumor of Xiaomi building a car has not been dispelled.

In December 2020, a number of online media and digital bloggers reported that "Xiaomi is about to release Qingyue S1, the 'first car for young people' jointly produced with BYD, with a price of 84999 yuan." It is understood that the vehicle is an open model and marked "Xiaomi Blue Sky Plan". After booking, users must go to the designated BYD dealership store to pick up the car. In this regard, Xiaomi once again refuted the rumor. "just grasp one principle: anyone who says Xiaomi is going to build a car is fake news." Xu Jieyun, general manager of the public relations department of Xiaomi Group, even posted a clarification on the social platform.

I thought this would come to an end, but at the end of 2020, technology giants such as Huawei, Alibaba, Baidu, Apple and other technology giants huddled into vehicle manufacturing, pushing Internet car-building to a new and most exciting part. Onlookers actually expected Xiaomi to enter the game for a long time. After all, Xiaomi has a layout in the automobile field for a long time.

According to the APP, Xiaomi affiliated companies currently own a total of 134 vehicle-related patents, and many of Xiaomi's affiliated companies register auto parts as business scope. Not only that, Xiaomi has also reached cooperation with a number of car companies in related technology areas. In March 2020, for example, Xiaomi partnered with Xilai to launch an app that can control cars anytime, anywhere on its smartwatch. In September 2019, Xiaomi said it would cooperate deeply with Xiaopeng to make the NFC function of Xiaomi 9 Pro available as a car key and take the lead in the P7, Xiaopeng's first sedan car.

According to the company's investment and financing data, Xiaomi has made 17 investment incidents in the transportation sector, including investing in Mukang Technology in 2012, a practical application developer specializing in the automotive field, and in 2014 invested in car smart terminal equipment manufacturer Kelly and vehicle smart product developer Ruimi. In November 2019, he participated in the C-round financing of the newly built brand Xiaopeng Automobile. In April 2020, participated in the B round financing of Shanghai Botai, an automobile networking enterprise.

From this point of view, Xiaomi does have a certain "car-building" foundation.

However, considering that in the past Xiaomi paid more attention to the creation of interconnected experience in the automotive field, empowering car companies through strong ecological chains, such as the interconnection of car owners, while the future intelligent new energy vehicles, the core technology is more focused on self-driving, V2X, three electricity systems and other areas, which Xiaomi lacks, even though Xiaomi has applied for a lot of related technology patents, if it wants to be converted into mass production applications, There is also a long time, the existing technology reserve is really difficult to support Xiaomi "streaking" to build a car.

In addition, Xiaomi lacks experience in vehicle design and development, manufacturing and even sales service, not to mention vehicle process design, supply chain management, sales channel operation, and so on, there are not many opportunities to touch deeply before, but these are precisely the keys to determine the success of a car-building project. Therefore, even if Xiaomi has the idea of building a car, according to the current situation, it is highly likely that it will choose to cooperate with traditional car companies, with the help of ecological empowerment, such as Huawei and Changan, Ali and SAIC, or through contract manufacturing to realize the dream of building a car. another is to buy a car company with car-building ability and qualification directly.

Perhaps, Xiaomi's "wait and see" is also giving yourself an opportunity to fully consider and investigate in many ways.
