Electric vehicle production capacity reaches three times Volvo expands Ghent plant

It is reported that Volvo plans to triple its electric car production capacity at its Ghent plant in Belgium in order to meet the growing demand for electric cars from consumers around the world. Volvo electric cars are expected to reach 60% of the company's overall electric vehicle capacity at the plant by 2022. In terms of sales, Volvo electric vehicles showed a strong growth trend in 2020, accounting for more than 100% of the total sales compared with 2019.

The Volvo Ghent plant is one of the places where XC40, Volvo's first all-electric model, is produced. The Ghent plant is now preparing for Volvo's second all-electric model, which will be built based on CMA's modular architecture and go into production in late 2021. In November 2020, the domestic pure electric version of XC40 was officially launched at Guangzhou Auto Show. The car's positioning compact pure electric SUV,NEDC has a range of 420km and is priced from 357000.

As early as 1972, Volvo issued the "Environmental Manifesto" and became the first manufacturer in the automobile industry to put forward the concept of environmental protection. In 2014, Volvo released Drive-E 's "three-step" electrification strategy, one is to improve the fuel efficiency of traditional cars, the second is to launch hybrid models, and the third is to develop pure electric vehicles. Volvo then announced that it would sell 1 million new energy vehicles worldwide by 2025, with pure electric models accounting for 50 per cent of global sales.

Javier Varela (Javier Varela), Volvo's global head of industrial operations and quality, said consumers can already see the advantages of new energy vehicles, and electrification represents Volvo's future. Volvo is committed to becoming a luxury electric car manufacturer and plans to launch several pure electric vehicles in the future.

In addition to the Ghent plant, Volvo also plans to increase electric vehicle capacity at other factories around the world. According to the plan, Volvo will have full motor manufacturing capacity by the middle of the next decade, and Volvo has invested heavily in the internal design and development of the motor.
