Taking advantage of the east wind of the electric car industry, Iron Man Musk overtook Bezos, who has dominated the list for three years, to become the new richest man in the world on Thursday.
As of 10:15 EDT on Thursday, Musk had a net worth of $188.5 billion, $1.5 billion more than Bezos, according to media statistics. As of press time, Tesla's share price is up 6% to more than $800, while Amazon is up only about 2%.
When he became the richest man in the world, Musk seemed to respond on Weibo: "all right, let's go back to work." Some netizens joked that Musk could be called a "master of mortals".
It should be noted that Musk was only worth about $27 billion at the beginning of 2020 and has just entered the top 50 of the global rich list. But Tesla's soaring share price put Mr Musk on the rocket, surging more than $150 billion a year, the fastest ever.
In July 2020, Musk surpassed Buffett to become the seventh richest person in the world. In November 2020, Musk overtook Bill Gates to become the second richest man. In the past year, Musk has earned more wealth than Bill Gates' total assets of $132 billion.
In addition, as the Democratic Party won two Senate seats in Georgia and gained control of both houses of Congress, the promotion of electric vehicles is expected to be accelerated, and Tesla's share price may have some room to rise in the future. By contrast, Amazon's share price could be under pressure in the future because Biden is likely to tighten regulation of technology companies.
