SHANGHAI, Dec 24 (SMM) — Shanghai base metals advanced across the board on Thursday morning, holding onto overnight gains, while their counterparts on the LME set for a mixed start, as investors expect a Brexit trade deal between the UK and the European Union as it approaches the deadline.

Shanghai base metals all closed higher in overnight trading. Copper advanced 1.13%, aluminium added 0.8%, zinc gained 0.63%, lead rose 1.67%, nickel firmed 0.79% and tin climbed 0.54%.

The LME complex performed similarly on Wednesday. Copper rose 1.3%, aluminium added 0.53%, zinc increased 1.18%, lead and nickel advanced 0.87% and tin gained 0.48%.

Copper: Three-month LME copper rose 1.3% to end at $7,847/mt on Wednesday, after hitting a nearly two-week low at $7,673/mt earlier in the session.  The most-traded SHFE 2102 copper contract advanced 1.13% to close at 58,350 yuan/mt in overnight trading.

US President Donald Trump threatened to not sign the relief bill passed by the Congress, but investors remained optimistic about a larger US economic stimulus package. The dollar slipped on Wednesday, after gaining for three straight sessions, as risk appetite rose on the expectation of an imminent Brexit trade deal between the UK and the European Union. Oil prices rose more than 2% on Wednesday, boosted by draws in US inventories of crude, gasoline and distillates that lifted investors’ hopes for some return in fuel demand, and this favoured copper futures. LME copper is expected to trade between $7,810-7,890/mt today, and SHFE copper between 58,200-58,700 yuan/mt, while spot copper will be traded between discounts of 20 yuan/mt and premiums of 80 yuan/mt.

Zinc: Three-month LME zinc fell to a more than two-week low of $2,768/mt after the bell, before reversing the losses to end 1.18% higher at $2,824/mt on Wednesday, with open interest decreasing 1,244 lots to 234,000 lots. Zinc stocks across LME-listed warehouses dropped by 650 mt or 0.31% to 206,225 mt. The expectation of an imminent Brexit trade deal between the UK and the European Union boosted risk appetite. US jobless claims remained elevated, but fell more than expected in the week ended December 19. These boosted LME zinc. But concerns on the new highly infectious coronavirus strain may pressure zinc prices. LME zinc is expected to fluctuate between $2,770-2,820/mt today.

The most-traded SHFE 2102 zinc contract added 0.63% to settle at 21,530 yuan/mt in overnight trading, with open interesting rising 442 lots to 95,117 lots. Positive domestic vaccine news and still tight zinc concentrate supply underpinned SHFE zinc, but the recent environmental protection inspections and restrictions on electricity consumption are likely to weigh on downstream consumption. The February contract is likely to move between 21,300-21,800 yuan/mt today, while spot premiums for domestic 0# Shuangyan will be seen higher at 140-160 yuan/mt against the January contract.

Nickel: The most-active SHFE 2103 nickel contract ended 0.79% higher at 125,350 yuan/mt in overnight trading, with open interest rising 6,985 lots to 134,000 lots.

Lead: Three-month LME lead gained 0.87% to close at $1,977/mt on Wednesday. A falling US dollar, an imminent Brexit trade deal and positive vaccine overshadowed President Donald Trump’s threat to veto the U.S. stimulus bill.

The most-liquid SHFE 2102 lead contract ended 1.67% firmer at 14,605 yuan/mt in overnight trading. Although the increase in SHFE lead stocks is expected to slow at the end of the year, fundamentals remained weak.

Tin: Three-month LME tin closed 0.48% higher at $20,040/mt on Wednesday. The dollar slipped on Wednesday, after gaining for three straight sessions, as risk appetite rose on the expectation of an imminent Brexit trade deal between the UK and the European Union.
Sterling and the euro took off against the greenback after the Brexit headlines, as did currencies tied to higher risk appetite such as the Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand dollars. LME tin is expected to trade between $19,800-20,300/mt today.

The most-liquid SHFE 2102 tin contract firmed 0.54% to end at 151,280 yuan/mt in overnight trading, with open interest decreasing 403 lots to 22,859 lots. Support below will be seen from the 150,000 mark today.

Selkirk Copper Intersects 9.3% Cu Over 5.4 Metres at Minto North
Selkirk Copper Mines has reported additional high-grade drill results from its ongoing Phase 2 programme at the Minto copper-gold-silver project in Yukon, Canada, including one of the highest-grade intersections recorded at the property. Step-out drilling at Minto North returned 9.27% copper, 7.43 g/t gold and 54.9 g/t silver, equivalent to 15.11% copper-equivalent, over 5.4 metres in drill hole 26SCM209. The same hole also intersected a separate 9.0-metre interval grading 0.97% copper, 2.58 g/t gold and 8.4 g/t silver, equivalent to 3.11% CuEq. Selkirk said the 5.4-metre interval ranks within the 99th percentile of more than 4,300 significant historical drill intercepts at Minto. Individual one-metre samples within the interval returned peak grades of up to 17.5% copper, 15.9 g/t gold and 81.9 g/t silver. The company also reported additional mineralisation from Area 118, Minto Main and Copper Keel. At Area 118, infill drilling intersected 2.54% copper, 1.25 g/t gold and 10.7 g/t silver over 3 metres, while another hole returned 1.61% copper, 0.59 g/t gold and 8.3 g/t silver over 6.9 metres. Selkirk's Phase 2 programme had originally targeted 50,000 metres of drilling. As of September 28, the company had completed 52,485 metres in 224 drill holes, equivalent to 105% of the planned meterage. Drilling is expected to continue until mid-October, with the remaining work focused on geotechnical data collection, water-monitoring wells and exploration of newly identified geophysical targets. The latest Minto North results further demonstrate the presence of high-grade copper-gold-silver mineralisation within areas relevant to Selkirk's planned restart strategy. The 5.4-metre interval is particularly notable because it ranks among the highest-grade intersections historically drilled at Minto. However, these are exploration results rather than additions to the current Mineral Resource Estimate. Attention will therefore remain on how the Phase 2 drilling is incorporated into future resource modelling and feasibility-level mine planning for the proposed restart of the Minto operation.

Panama Commission to Recommend Cobre Panama Restart Through State Partnership
A Panamanian government commission is expected to recommend restarting the suspended Cobre Panama copper mine through a state partnership with First Quantum Minerals, according to Reuters, citing two sources familiar with the matter. The commission is set to formally submit its recommendation to President José Raúl Mulino, who will make the final decision on whether and how the mine could restart. The proposed structure would involve a joint venture between the Panamanian state and First Quantum, although a final agreement with the miner would still need to be negotiated. Cobre Panama has remained suspended since 2023 after widespread public opposition over environmental and governance concerns, followed by a Supreme Court ruling that declared the mine's operating contract unconstitutional. The operation had accounted for around 1% of global copper production before it was idled and was previously First Quantum Minerals' largest revenue-generating asset, contributing around 40% of the company's revenue. According to foreign media reports, the Panamanian government has been weighing the economic importance of the mine against continuing public concerns over environmental oversight and the distribution of economic benefits. A government study published earlier in September estimated that the mine's closure had resulted in the loss of more than 30,000 jobs and reduced taxes and royalties to the state by nearly US$1.4 billion. Foreign media previously reported that Panama was considering a model under which the mine's underlying concession would remain with the state while First Quantum retained operational control. A 60–65% stake for First Quantum had also been discussed, although it remains unclear whether those terms are part of the current proposal. A formal recommendation to restart Cobre Panama would represent a significant step toward potentially returning one of the world's largest copper mines to production. However, the restart remains uncertain because President Mulino has not yet made a final decision, a joint-venture agreement with First Quantum has not been reached, and the legal structure of any new operating arrangement would still need to address Panama's current restrictions on new mining concessions. Given Cobre Panama's previous contribution of around 1% of global copper supply, any credible pathway toward a restart will remain closely watched by the copper market.

Amazon Invests $1.59B in Taiwan AI Server PCB Maker GCE, Secures Strategic Stake Amid Expansion
Taiwan AI server PCB maker Gold Circuit Electronics announced on September 29 that Amazon will join a private placement as a strategic investor, subscribing 1,856,308 new shares at NT$856 per share, or about NT$1.59 billion, with the shares locked up for three years. The subscription price equals 80 percent of the NT$1,070 reference price. GCE already supplies main boards for AWS Trainium AI servers, and Trainium 3 is expected to enter mass production in the third quarter of 2026, with AWS-related shipments ramping from that quarter. The same day, the board approved NT$7.9 billion for a new plant, comprising about NT$3.8 billion for land and NT$4.1 billion for buildings and equipment, to be deployed from the fourth quarter of 2026 and funded by unsecured convertible bonds. GCE is expanding in Taiwan, Suzhou, Changshu and Thailand, has raised its 2026 capital expenditure to NT$19 billion, and says high-end AI board capacity still cannot fully meet customer demand; the cloud provider's equity stake should help secure new plant capacity ahead of demand.
