SMM: on Saturday, local time, the Indonesian government issued a statement confirming that Tesla, the global leader in electric cars, will send a delegation to visit Indonesia next month to discuss potential investment in the electric vehicle supply chain.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo held a video conference with Indonesian Minister of Ocean Affairs and Investment Luhut B. Pandjaitan and Tesla CEO Musk on Friday local time, the two sides discussed the possibility of Tesla's investment in Indonesia, and exchanged views on the electric vehicle industry and the main components of batteries. President Widodo also proposed to Musk that Indonesia be used as a launch platform for SpaceX rockets.

It is worth mentioning that Indonesia's president has publicly touted the country's nickel reserves several times earlier, saying that the country has plans to become the world's largest producer of lithium batteries, and that the world's largest nickel reserves are crucial. Minister Luhut also said in an interview with the media last month that many companies "have a good chance" of investing in nickel supply chains in Indonesia to reduce costs.

For Tesla, seeking nickel resources is also an important part of ensuring the future industrial status. Mr Musk has said he plans to offer "huge long-term contracts" to suppliers, as long as nickel mines are mined in an "efficient and environmentally friendly" way.
