SHANGHAI, Nov 28 (SMM)—The delivery ceremony of a high-pressure reactor, a core equipment of the hydro-metallurgy project at Huayue Nickel & Cobablt (Indonesia) of Huayou Cobalt & Morimatsu, was held at Morimatsu’s Nantong factory on November 20.  Since then, all four high-pressure reactors have been completed and delivered, marking that the Huayue project is about to enter a new stage of key equipment installation.

In March this year, Huayue Nickel & Cobalt (Indonesia) hydro-metallurgy project started construction. Yao Haijing, deputy general manager of the project, said Indonesia has rich nickel ore resources and Huayou boasts advanced hydro-metallurgy technology. The combination of the two can complement each other's advantages and realize the maximum value.

The Huayue Nickel & Cobalt (Indonesia) project uses the most advanced third-generation high-pressure acid leaching process to extract nickel-cobalt hydroxide from laterite ore, which has multiple advantages such as low costs and environmental protection. The project is a perfect integration of Indonesian resources and Chinese technology. After its commissioning, it will have an epoch-making impact on global nickel production and consumption.

According to the recent third-quarter performance announcement released by Huayou Cobalt, its revenue for the first three quarters of 2020 stood at about 14.84 billion yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 5.82%; net project stood at around 687 million yuan, surging 640.27% on the year; basic earnings per share came in at 0.61 yuan, with a year-on-year increase of 662.5%.

In the first half of this year, Huayou Cobalt operated at full capacity, producing 42,704 mt of electro deposited copper, up 49.54% year on year, 13,510 mt of cobalt products (including entrusted processing businesses), largely unchanged from the same period last year, and 13,004 mt of precursors, rising 95.47% from a year ago. For the same period, the company sold 10,360 mt of cobalt products, and 12,745 mt of precursors, jumping 215.64% year on year.

At present, Huayou Cobalt has built and commissioned 55,000 mt of ternary precursor capacity, and its sales of ternary precursors in the third quarter are expected to stand at 8,000-9,000 mt, with 3,000-4,000 mt for each single month. And sales totalled 21,000 mt in the first three quarters of 2020, compared with 13,000 mt in the same period last year, according to Soochow Securities. The company is expected to sell 60,000-70,000 mt of ternary precursors in 2021 amid recovered domestic demand.

[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] Taiwan (PoC)'s Sinkang Industries H1 Gross Margin Hits 12%, EPS Jumps 7.5x
Taiwan (PoC)'s stainless steel midstream processor Sinkang Industries reported a blockbuster H1 2026: gross margin surged 10 percentage points YoY to 12%, driving after-tax net profit up more than 7x to NT$134 million (approximately USD4.2 million) with EPS of NT$1.02, a dramatic turnaround from near-breakeven in H1 2025. President Cheng Chu-Tzu attributed the profit jump primarily to nickel price strength on geopolitical tensions and Indonesia's production cut policies lifting stainless steel pricing. The product mix is highly concentrated, with 304-series accounting for 93% of revenue. While H1 revenue grew 9.5% YoY to NT$1.666 billion, momentum has already stalled entering H2: July revenue grew just 0.9% YoY and August turned negative at -5.3% YoY. Management characterized H2 as "stable" rather than "accelerating," with Cheng noting that raw material cost visibility is low as pricing power rests entirely with upstream mills including Tang Eng, Yusco, Walsin Lihwa, and Tung Mung. Whether the H1 gross margin peak can be sustained remains uncertain. The company flagged gradually declining inventory levels as a potential restocking catalyst, and identified semiconductor and electronics customer development as its medium-to-long-term growth axis.

[SMM Nickel Morning Meeting Summary] China-US presidential meeting sparks market expectations of recovery; the most-traded SHFE nickel contract drifts higher in early trading
[9.23 Morning Meeting Minutes] President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the US from September 23 to 25, marking the first state visit to the US in 11 years and the second exchange of visits between the Chinese and US heads of state within half a year. Earlier, He Lifeng completed economic and trade consultations with Bessent and Greer in New York, with officials describing the talks as "candid, in-depth, and constructive," and a dialogue on AI issues was also held. The central parity rate of the yuan rose for the ninth consecutive day, with the onshore yuan closing at 6.6955, the highest since July 2022. The outcome of the meeting has become the biggest variable for global markets this week. The most-traded SHFE nickel contract (2610) drifted higher in early trading, closing the morning session at 124,400 yuan/mt, up 0.70%. On the macro front, falling oil prices eased pressure from rate-hike trades, but US Fed officials continued to strike a hawkish tone, and expectations for an October rate hike remained. On the fundamental side, water resource disruptions in Indonesia continued to affect supply expectations, but nickel's own high inventory and weak demand pattern remained unchanged. In the short term, the most-traded SHFE nickel contract is expected to consolidate, with a projected range of 123,000-126,000 yuan/mt.
