Vedanta Zinc International Gamsberg Zinc Mine in South Africa closed due to accident

Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) said on Wednesday that the Gamsberg zinc mine in South Africa had been closed after an accident and disappearance of workers on Tuesday.

SMM11, March 20 (Xinhua)-- the Gamsberg zinc mine in South Africa has been closed after workers went missing after an accident on Tuesday,: Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) said on Wednesday.

So far, eight employees have been rescued and two employees are still missing.

Gamsberg went into production in 2019, with VZI holding 69.6 per cent, Exxaro Resources holding 24.4 per cent and Employee Share Ownership Plan holding the remaining 6 per cent.

According to the official website of VZI, if the first phase is in full operation, the mine could produce 250000 tons of zinc concentrate per year.
