Epidemic disrupts Mexican supply chain Chevrolet Corvette suspends production

SMM: it is reported that GM will suspend production of Chevrolet Corvette for the rest of the week due to another cut off of Mexican parts due to the epidemic.

GM spokesman David Barnas said the (Bowling Green) plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky will be closed on Wednesday because of Veterans Day. In addition, the plant will remain closed for two days on Thursday and Friday due to disruptions in the parts supply chain. This may cost Corvette production of 540 vehicles.

"We expect normal operations to resume next Monday, October 16," Barnas said in an email. Our supply chain, production and engineering teams are working closely with the supply base to reduce the further impact of the outbreak on production. "

This could put more production pressure on GM, as the company plans to complete the remaining 2020 Corvette orders as soon as possible, so that it can start production of 2021 Corvette models on Dec. 8. GM was forced to suspend production of Corvette for a week in early October, also because of a shortage of parts.

GM C8 Corvette has experienced several parts shortages this year. Due to supplier restrictions, the company removed 5VM carbon fiber aerodynamic components and high-wing spoilers from the list of options for sports cars, but these parts have been added back to 2021 models.

Although the epidemic disrupted GM's production timeline of the 2020 Corvette, as of October 7, 2020, the company had excellently completed the production of 13039 Corvettes. Earlier, GM said it hoped to produce 20,000 vehicles by the end of the year, roughly the same as its previous annual production.

The 2021 Corvette has only minor changes compared to the 2020 model, including the addition of two new body colors, racing stripe options, internal color combinations and the standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Production of the 2021 models will proceed as planned by the end of the year, Barnas said.
