Qualcomm official announced the launch of 5G infrastructure semiconductor platform to replicate the successful model of mobile phone chip.

SMM: on Tuesday, local time, Qualcomm officially announced the launch of the 5G infrastructure semiconductor platform, becoming the first American technology company to enter the field dominated by Chinese and European companies.

Although Qualcomm, the world's largest supplier of mobile phone chips, offers the latest chips for a range of 5G Android flagships. However, in the field of 5G infrastructure, Huawei, Nokia and Ericsson are still the few major options for telecom operators to upgrade their equipment. It is worth noting that Qualcomm's move is not a direct challenge to these communications giants, but an attempt to become a chip supplier to the entire industry, just like the mobile phone industry.

The current 5G base station market still requires the equipment side to complete the design of the entire device from head to toe, and then order the chip from the supplier and program the software. The significance of Qualcomm's entry is similar to the introduction of standard processor chips in the mobile phone industry, and the combination of Google's Android system has enabled hundreds of companies to rely on these two platforms to enter the smartphone market.

Cristiano Amon, chairman of Qualcomm, pointed out that a similar situation is happening in the 5G base station industry, where companies such as Microsoft are developing software that can run "virtual" 5G base stations. Qualcomm hopes to supply chips to existing industry companies as well as new challengers.

Amon said in an interview with the media that Qualcomm has an advantage in considering next-generation infrastructure. The company will not be held back by any old products, so it can design something from scratch.
