SMM: after Tesla announced the location of the second US superfactory in Austin, Texas, in July this year, the electric car manufacturer is expanding further in the state. According to media reports, Tesla has bought more land near the Austin super factory and has plans to buy another piece of land. It is speculated that the new land may be used to build another battery factory.
Lease records in Travis County, Texas show that Tesla bought another 381 acres of land on Harold Green Road, adjacent to the 2100 acres it bought earlier this year to build an Austin superfactory (Tesla's largest property to date, with great potential for expansion).
It is reported that the newly purchased land has not only increased Tesla's total real estate, but also added a number of entrances from existing roads to factory sites.
Tesla also plans to buy another piece of land southeast of Austin, according to local developers who know the area.
In July, Tesla bought his first piece of land in Austin for nearly $100m to build his Texas superfactory. At the second-quarter earnings meeting in late July, Tesla announced that the construction process of the plant had begun.
It is reported that the factory in Teslad has begun to hire people. The company told Travis County officials that it would employ at least 5000 people to work for the plant.
Texas Super Factory will be Tesla's fifth factory after Nevada Super Factory (Battery Factory), New York Super Factory, Shanghai Super Factory and Berlin Super Factory. It will also be the fourth car assembly plant after Fremont, Shanghai and Berlin.
Build another battery factory?
In addition to the Tesla factory, the newly bought land could eventually be used for research and development, design and battery manufacturing, according to analysts, commercial real estate agents and people familiar with the company's plans.
Interestingly, Tesla just held his first Battery Day on Sept. 22, at which he introduced plans to produce a new built-in battery that not only has a higher energy density, but also reduces the cost of car manufacturing.
Tesla's move to buy more land near the Texas plant may be a sign that the company may be preparing for another battery manufacturing plant, thereby increasing Tesla's battery capacity.
It is easy for outsiders to find a reason for Tesla to build a battery factory near the Texas factory. Tesla plans to build cars in Texas that require a lot of batteries, such as its first electric pickup truck, the Cybertruck and Semi electric semitrailer trucks. The construction of a new battery factory can speed up the process of putting batteries into vehicles.
Moreover, Tesla CEO Elon Musk (Elon Musk) also said at the Battery Day event that the company will need more battery factories to achieve its goals.
