SMM9 March 22: Tom Dobbins, chairman of the American Aluminium Association, said after referring to the announcement by the Office of the United States Trade Representative that tariffs on unwrought or P1020 aluminum imports from Canada would be lifted. After the decision is implemented, trade in unalloyed and unwrought aluminum may return to normal in the last four months of 2020.

Imports will fall sharply from the surge at the beginning of the year, in line with industry expectations. The removal of tariffs on Canadian aluminum was the right decision for Alcoa and its 162000 workers. The Aluminium Association and its members support tariff and quota-free trade in North America in line with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

The Aluminium Association of the United States and Canada, labor groups and countless industry groups all support the continued free flow of foreign trade products in North America. Both Canada and the United States have invested in aluminum import monitoring systems, demonstrating a strong commitment to trade enforcement.

The Alcoa represents the aluminum manufacturing industry in the United States and about 70% of aluminum companies that ship in North America, ranging from primary aluminum production to value-added products to recycling.
