What is the difference between Chinese new energy cars and international brands?

SMM News: September 17, J.D. Power (Jundi) released the 2020 China New Energy vehicle experience Research SM (NEVXI) success. The research shows that with the development of new energy vehicle market into the fast lane, the quality gap between new energy vehicle brands is gradually widening, and the quality of international brand new energy vehicle is in the leading position. Chinese new power brands (independent new power brands) and Chinese traditional brands (traditional independent brands) new energy vehicles need to be improved.

China New Energy vehicle experience Research (NEVXI), counts and measures the quality problems encountered by new energy vehicle owners during the 2-6-month ownership period. The quality of new cars is expressed by the average number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). The lower the number of problems, the better the quality. In 2020, the average number of quality problems complained by owners of new energy vehicles was 138 PP100. The number of new vehicle quality problems of traditional independent brand new energy vehicles (147PP100) is much higher than that of international brands (1122PP100) and independent new power brands (126PP100).

The number of quality problems of small pure electric vehicles is much higher than that of other pure electric vehicles. The average number of problems reported by owners of small pure electric vehicles (164PP100,) is much higher than that of compact pure electric vehicles (141PP100), medium-sized pure electric vehicles (124PP100) and large pure electric vehicles (116PP100).

The study includes 236 problem points in 10 major problem categories (configuration / control system / dashboard, body appearance, body interior, infotainment system, seat, driving experience, driving assistance, powertrain, battery / charging and air conditioning). Among them, international brand new energy vehicles are better than independent new power brands and traditional independent brands in terms of body appearance, infotainment system, seats, powertrain and body interior. on the other hand, independent new power brands outperform traditional independent brands and international brands in driving experience, air conditioning and battery / charging.

In addition, the study also found that new energy car owners are younger and more open to brands. The proportion of new energy car owners of post-90s has risen from 24% in 2019 to 37% this year. In terms of brand acceptance, the proportion of new energy vehicle consumers who can accept any new energy vehicle brand is 78%, which is 6 percentage points higher than that of traditional energy vehicle consumers.

The traditional quality problem is the main problem complained by the owners of new energy vehicles. The most frequent complaints from owners of new energy vehicles are body appearance (16%), body interior (13%), infotainment system (13%) and driving experience (13%). Among them, car odor and tire noise are among the top 20 problems in the industry.

The quality complaint of plug-in hybrid model is lower than that of pure electric model. The number of quality problems of plug-in hybrid models (121PP100) is lower than that of pure electric vehicles (22PP100). Among them, the performance of luxury plug-in hybrid models is better than that of mainstream plug-in hybrid models in terms of body appearance and infotainment system.

For the existing problems and backward status quo, how to solve the difficulties of Chinese brands? Cai Ming, General Manager of Automotive products Division of J.D. Power China, said: "with the gradual shift of the new energy vehicle market from policy-driven to policy-driven and market two-wheel drive, the competition among brands will gradually return to the competition of product strength. Compared with traditional independent brands, international brands and independent new power brands have more advantages in resource integration, and are more favored by the capital market at the same time. If the traditional independent brand new energy vehicles want to achieve long-term viability, they need to accelerate technology and product innovation and strive to improve product quality. " Ren Hongyan, vice president of new energy vehicle service solutions for J.D. Power in China, said, "New Power brands at home and abroad are more prominent in appearance design, human-computer interaction and technological innovation, and joint ventures are better in traditional production processes and production capacity. Manufacturers need to make clear their own advantages and disadvantages, make up for their shortcomings, and polish products with good quality and sense of science and technology.
