SMM9: the Office of the United States Trade Representative yesterday announced the elimination of tariffs, but said it "expects" to import no more than 83000 tons of unwrought unalloyed aluminum from Canada in September and November and 70000 tons in October and December.

The decision involves a 10% tariff imposed by the United States on unwrought unalloyed aluminum in Canada.

A month ago, the US government reimposed the tariff on Canada on the grounds of a "surge" in imports. Us trade representative Leiter Heitzer has said the country's aluminium producers have been hit by increased imports.

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister Christian Freeland announced on the evening of August 6 local time that the tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian aluminum products were "unreasonable and unacceptable" and that aluminum trade was mutually beneficial. As a countermeasure for the United States to impose tariffs on Canadian aluminum, Canada will impose tariffs on imported American goods, the total amount of which will be equal to that of the United States.
