SMM9: the Brazilian Senate recently passed a bill to tighten security rules for tailings dams in the mining industry and impose fines of up to 1 billion reais (US $187 million) for violations.

Brazil has adopted legislation to strengthen its strict attitude towards the ban on upstream tailings dams in order to avoid a repeat of similar mining accidents in 2019.

The latest bill also prohibits the construction of any tailings in downstream areas within 10 kilometers or 30 minutes of driving from residential areas.
