SMM9 March 3: BHP Billiton has signed a renewable energy purchase agreement with CleanCo, a state-owned clean energy producer and retailer in Queensland, so that half of the electricity needs of BHP Billiton's Queensland coal mines can be met, greatly reducing carbon emissions through the use of renewable energy such as solar and wind energy.

By 2025, the agreement is expected to help the mine reduce electricity consumption by 50% compared with fiscal year 2020, equivalent to a reduction of about 1.7 million tons of carbon emissions between 2021 and 2015.

The agreement will take effect from January 1, 2021 for a period of five years.
