Octavio Araneda, chief executive of Chile's state-owned Codelco, the ball's largest copper producer, said on Wednesday that the company expected a rapid increase in ore processing capacity in its Chuquicamata underground copper mining project.

SMM: Octavio Araneda, CEO of Chile's state-owned Codelco, the world's largest copper producer, said on Wednesday that the company expects the ore processing capacity of its Chuquicamata underground copper mining project to increase rapidly. Affected by measures to control the coronavirus pandemic, the company had been forced to suspend work on the copper project, which aims to extend the mining life of the century-old open-pit mine. "the Chuquicamata underground copper mining project is progressing faster than planned, which is very good because it will enable the company to produce more high-quality copper this year," Octavio Araneda said in a video. "if we continue to do things well, we can break through the capacity involved in the mine and reach 140000 tons per day (copper ore processing capacity) as soon as possible. Codelco said last week that it would restart temporarily shelved operations and projects, starting with the huge underground mining project at the Chuquicamata mine.
